Most important game in Nintendo's history?

What would you say is the most important game in Nintendo history (besides Super Mario Bros)?

I would say Donkey Kong, since it basically put them on the road to making Super Mario Bros, and DK is the game that got Shigeru Miyamoto noticed to begin with for the most part.

But...Pokemon is also pretty big for them. Without it, I doubt the handheld systems would be where they are.

On the negative side of things, Mortal Kombat had a huge effect on Nintendo's history. The editing of it was the thing that turned the Genesis into a cooler console and started the whole image of Nintendo systems being "kiddy," which they still haven't quite recovered from.

Excluding Mario makes this a tough one to answer.I'm inclined to say "Zelda" but when I think about it,I must concur with Sheena."Donkey Kong".

Yeah, Zelda isn't too popular in Japan. I don't know. Besides Mario, I can't really see anything else being so huge for Nintendo.

Lower than expected sales for Twilight Princess, though Phantom Hourglass is the third highest preordered Zelda there.

for everyone the most important game is ocarina of time.. for me it's majora's mask

Super Mario World. Super Mario Bros. may have set the standard for platforming and gaming as a whole, but SMW perfected it. My favorite Mario game of all time.

And I don't care if you said no Mario games. You can't have a topic like this without mentioning this game.

But if I had to pick a non-Mario game...I'd pick Super Smash Bros. Basically the most addicting fighting game of all time and it combines a lot of Nintendo's greatest heros and villains all condensed into one Smash fest.

Yeah I know. It's just that Super Mario Bros is the obvious answer, and wouldn't leave any room for discussion. So I made the topic the way I did so that people would actually have something to respond to. And as you can see, it works, since some people have different ideas on what other games are important in Nintendo's history. :)

I think the Megaman series was key in promoting both the NES and SNES. I never actually heard of the blue bomber until many years after the fact, but it seemed that people who weren't playing Mario games on the NES were either playing Megaman or Final Fantasy.

Or did these games have to be made by Nintendo to count?

No, any game on a Nintendo system. I posted about Mortal Kombat in my opening post, for example. :) Those are two good ones you brought up, too, especially Final Fantasy.

Yes, Donkey Kong would have been the best answer. Since Nintendo's early works prior to that year bombed badly. One being a space-invaders clone.

Super Mario/Duck Hunt pack-in cart was a brilliant idea. Especially being one of the first system bundles to come with 2 controllers, a light gun, and 2 games for a budget price.

However, the biggest impact that Nintendo made on it's own history. Was securing the rights to publish TETRIS for their portable game system, the GameBoy. Especially bundling it in the system itself.

Let's not forget Super Mario 64. The first 3D game to actually get it right. While many games, even to this day, struggle with camera angles and 3D movement. This game still manages a well-rounded experience for any new comer to what a 3D Adventure game should be like.

Donkey Kong. It helped Nintendo get on the right foot. (Mario helped alot but Donkey Kong was also a key factor in it's success.)

Donkey Kong brought them into the market, Mario helped them to dominate it.
