New PS3 Rumors not good for used game retailers

The latest rumor on the block says that the PS3 will not be able to play used, rented or borrowed games. Here is how they are apparently doing it.

Those familiar with Sony's CD DRM practices were unsurprised when Joystiq reported that the company has patented DRM software that could prevent PlayStation 3s from playing used or borrowed games. The site cites US Patent #6,816,972, which is for "a device and method for protection of legitimate software against used software and counterfeit software in recording media." Specifically, the patented technology would verify that when software was inserted into a "machine" (read: console), it was registered to that machine. If it couldn't, the technology would prompt the machine to shut down, preventing the software from being accessed.

That is a load of crap and is only going to cost Sony money if this turns out to be true.

say what..... this would be the MOST RETARDED move EVER by ANY gaming company.

If they do this, they are digging their own graves.

Personally... If they do this, I hope it is the beginning of the nails in the coffin.

It is very possible this may happen. Sony lost lots of money to import games and burned games. This would be one way of stopping it. Not sure if this is a good direction though. It sounds like essencially, once a game is played on the PS3, it becomes "locked" to that machine.

if sony makes this most heinous and just plain greedy move, then i have no doubt they will be hated buy 99.9 percent of all gamers.sony could not be stupid enough to actually do something like that though.....or could they?

I dont think they are that stupid either, but I wouldn't be surprised. They already are in trouble for the anti-piracy tactics they implemented in their music cd's. But now that the word is out they probably wont go through with it.

That is THE dumbest thing I have ever heard.

If they do this, they are digging their own graves.

It's their grave to dig, and if this turns out to be true I'll point and laugh while covering their grave myself.

its things like this that make me steer clear of sony...i get the feeling they are always trying to screw me out of money.....and its not like sonys games will be something that cant be done on the 360...i will be waiting for the revolution.until then i will be building a neo cd collection :)

I say good for them! If they are going to enforce copying and piracy, then I am all for it.

I don't mind enforcing piracy... but man... you won't be able to buy used games and use them if this happens.
That is the part that is not cool.

Piracy sucks (everyone here knows I am 100% anti-piracy).... but this move sucks even more... and will hurt not only retailers, BUT consumers. IT will render ALL these games useless once people want to sell them OR trade them in. The trade market dies, the 2nd hand market dies... and honestly... if those go, EVERY business will be negatively effected.

There's a thin line between piracy and "try-before-you buy". They may be trying to prevent piracy, but people will probably mod their PS3's beyond belief just to avoid this. If you get a PS3 (and this is in effect), you'd better do ALOT of research before you buy any games.

Very true. Just not sure how to counter something like this.

This is just great. It's an absolutely obsurd move by Sony to do this. Personally I will buy the Rev, but still undecided on the 360 or PS3. If Sony goes ahead on this move, I will never buy another Sony console.

I don't think it will ever be countered. You can take steps to deter it... but with systems being modded and other methods to getting around piracy measures... I don't think it can be stopped (where there is a will, there is a way). I wish it would stop because I personally think we would see prices go down all over.

regardless..... I think it is a BAD move to limit used games .... and not have a used game market. A lot of people buy newer games with trades on used games. Think if you couldn't trade in your used games. That would just downright suck :lol Not to mention, it would suck for me... as I deal in them :)

Yes, at the very least, you should be able to rent games before buying them.

This move is just plain suicidal from my standpoint.

I mean I'm sure BV can concur, but I work in game retail and used sales make up the majority of our profit. Not only that, but how many used games are available can make a huge impact on a customer's decision to buy a system. A HUGE part of Sony's success with PS2 is that even if a person buys a console new, they know they can get a bunch of games for cheap if they buy used. Not only that, most stores offer better deals and better warranties on used items. People can buy a PS2 and get great games like Final Fantasy X for $14.99 used. Grand Theft Auto III is like $6.99 used now.

But imagine if you can't buy used and new games cost $60. The market will kill itself because of two things: 1)at $60 a pop, most people will only buy games they are sure they are going to like, so there goes original IPs, and 2) most people will just wait until the price goes down, which will make it seem like a game isn't as successful as it should have been.

True Mai. I agree.
But there is also number 3, which I most likely will be. The consumers will avoid Sony like the plague and they will tank in sales if they go ahead with such a folly.

I really doubt that they will do such a thing....it would kill them sales wise

I kind of believe it. Sony already looks bad in the public's eye because of the whole anti-piracy tactics they've been using on their music cd's.

Sony needs to take a page from the Sega playbook. Seriously. If they want to fight piracy, make the games for PS3 impossible to copy, simply by using larger than normal disks. Sega used bigger disks on the Dreamcast, making them impossible to copy onto standard disks... why can't Sony do something similar? If it requires paying a small fee to Sega to do, then pay up and do it, rather than alienate a large section of the gaming community!
