Nintendo, please don't go through with this....(patent)

http://videogames.yahoo.com/feature/nintendo-planning-friendlier-approach-to-game-difficulty/1278610

The days of getting stuck in games could be gone altogether, if a patent filed recently by Nintendo comes to fruition.

Nintendo's idea, made public in a patent application this week, hinges on making demonstration videos available to players while they're playing the game, either as a thumbnail view or a full-screen animation. Players could interrupt the demonstration at any point, taking control back to continue playing without assistance. Think of it as a tutorial guide that lasts throughout the entire game.

It also proposes to let players start playing at any point during a game -- a feature that's in many games already, but typically only unlocked once a player has already completed those levels. Just like skimming a newspaper article for the juicy bits, this would allow players to tackle games, in their entirety, at their own whim.

Although the patent application is chock full of grade-A lawyerspeak, it summarizes the technology as "allowing a player to freely play and enjoy the game to the end...a [system] for preventing a player who desires to clear a game by him/herself from losing his/her interest in the game."

If you get stuck in a level, fret not! Nintendo will let you skip the level all together! Now you can tell your friends you're truly hardcore when you beat Zelda Twilight Princess in less than an hour!

/sarcasm

*sigh*

i don't have any problems with this patent, if it's an optional thing then i couldn't care less it's obviously for the casual audience that can't even get at least 60 stars in super mario galaxy and they try their best (yes some casuals are that dumb >_< ) and even i sometimes need a little help figuring out some stuff so i don't see the harm in it.

the second feature is the one i don't agree with, why would someone want to skip a chunk of the game? i mean sure if it is an optional part of the game then yes leave them optional and let them skip it if they want but if they talk about main quest stuff then why would someone want to skip it? unless the game is as bad as alone in the dark and in the end they just want to see the cutscenes....

overall they can do what they want as long as they keep it optional, i prefer to finish my games at 100% so the skipping feature is useless for me because what i want is to take as much juice as i can from the game.... sure after seeing how casuals easily give up with certain games i think this could actually help them even further without (in theory) sacrificing difficulty for those who want it

I saw it on my front page on Yahoo, but I decided that it was so ridiculous that I wasn't gonna post it. :lol

Omg it's gaming for babies =D!!

@alee, pretty much what it seems. Gaming for Babies! Rated T! for TODDLER!

Seriously, games are designed to make you want to win, to succeed. I hate when parents are like "This game is too hard for my kid". So? Schools are going to teach them harder things as they go, better prepare them now or else you'll be sorry. What I'm saying, is a game teaches a kid how to get aggressive, set some goals, and achieve. For god sakes Miyamoto, get some balls man! I know you didn't design Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels, Mr. Miyamoto, since that was done by another division of the Mario Club, but that was a MAN'S MAN'S GAME!!! (Yes I made a new adjective to describe how "Chuck Norris"-ish a game should be...tough as nails).

If Kids or new comers to games just give up during a difficult situation, then that isn't even worth the $50 or $60 you just spent on that new game!

Exactly...part of the fun of a game is the challenge. And being stuck on a boss for several days is something I like, because you feel that accomplishment when you finally beat that boss.

This is like the Vita-Chambers in BioShock. I personally hate the idea, but no one is making you use them. They haven't taken any of the challenge out of games just as long as you're disciplined enough not to use the stuff they provide.

Discipline is hard to come by with casual gamers, which this is geared towards. That, or toddlers. I haven't figured it out yet.

If it doesn't pertain to you, why should it matter? Don't use the feature if you don't like it, but give others the chance to if they want to. Live and let live.

Eh, I don't mind with this for certain games like if I get stuck on a puzzle, I'll try to see how to do it. It'll be like a visual walkthrough. I wouldn't skip that part of the game though.

it's hard to imagine that you have never ever ever ever used some sort of small walkthrough or outside help on something.... in fact this is just makes easier for casual gamers to get some help in their games, for us hardcore if we get TRULY TRULY stuck in something for more than a week XD then we use gamefaqs... which not everyone knows about...

To put it bluntly, because it's stupid. Because I don't like it, and that's good enough for me.

Some call me narrow-minded. :D

Hard to believe, yes, but no..I haven't used a walk-through..if I get stuck..I wait until I can figure it out, or move on to something else till I give it another try. This is why I've never beaten Resident Evil 2, Final Fantasy X (though I played it like 5 times), and Xenosaga Episode 1.

Yeah that pretty much sums up my thoughts.

It's nice of Nintendo to try and be all-inclusive, but this is way beyond necessary.

i do have to agree the second feature is stupid (it was stupid in alone in the dark.. skip parts in the game? boy the company was predicting the game was terrible or something?)

well i have to admit i usually use them for sidequests and second playthrough (in tales series most of the time), but even you have gotten some outside help haven't you? why did you create the trophy/achievement thread then? the outside help has always been there, you never used it so is basically the same thing here, just ignore it xD

but now that i think about it, maybe these gameplay videos won't cover sidequests or extra stuff, just main quest, if they only cover that then this is useless only then i will agree that this is a bunch of crap XD, let's hope it just stays a patent and never comes to fruition if that's the case

I just don't like the idea of Nintendo giving people an easy out. What kind of message does that send?

It's like, hey, you don't have to work hard to achieve something. We'll give you an easy button.

It's like how in school now, some schools don't even give out Fs anymore. Kids are being babied too much these days. If they go through adolescence with everything being handed to them, life is going to suck when they hit the real world.

So true Mai, they lower the standards so they can help the other kids who complain if the test were too hard! seriously WTH! I bombed the SAT once, on comprehension skills, but did I give up? NO! I took it again and finally passed!

Like Bruce Wayne's father said unto him, "Why do we fall?" So we can teach ourselves to GET BACK UP!

Trophies and achievements are just extra. They're not side-quests or sub-games that have to do with the main game. :)

I'll agree that it's a waste of resources for Nintendo, IMO, but if it helps some kid get into gaming, I'm all for it. A steep learning curve isn't a requirement for games, and having easier games that introduce new gamers to the medium is a good thing (as long as it doesn't get too pervasive, as it has on the Wii).

There-in lies the problem though. Yes, it'll bring a new crowd of kids to gaming, or well, the Wii, but if they grow up being helped through a game, they'll expect to be helped in future games (and that's what Nintendo plans on doing). This isn't just a phase for them. It's almost like they're saying, "hey, we'll help you learn about games, then you can go buy a PS3 or 360 if you want a challenge".

or they will figure out that guides take the fun out of the game and not use them.... you know not everyone that found out about gamefaqs or youtube uses it all the time

example number 1 = YOU :lol

Dude, when I was young and first got into gaming, I used cheat codes in every game I played and used guides and walkthroughs whenever they were available to me. You grow out of it once you get better at gaming. Now I use guides very very sparingly, usually only to make sure I do all the sidequests and get collectibles when I'm on a second or third playthrough.
