No controller still ?

Revolution controller not done

Shigeru Miyamoto reveals that the next-generation console's mysterious controller hasn't had its functionality finalized.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TOKYO--At the Electronic Entertainment Expo last month, Nintendo its next-generation console, the Revolution. However, nowhere to be seen was the device's controller, which is rumored to contain everything from gyroscopic controllers to DS-esque touch screens. Much of the press present at the E3 presentation concluded that Nintendo didn't showcase the Revolution controller because it didn't want to tip its next-gen hand to rivals Sony and Microsoft.

Apparently, though, there was another reason why the controller couldn't be shown--it's not done yet.

Today, during a business strategy conference in Japan, senior director and general manager of Nintendo Entertainment Analysis and Development (EAD) Shigeru Miyamoto disclosed that the Revolution's controller not only hasn't reached its final form factor, but is still very much in flux.

"We're at a stage where we're adding and removing various kinds of functions, which has been very fun," he said. Miyamoto went on to say that Nintendo's main cause for removing functions is concern that the controller could become too complex, making gameplay overly difficult.

Unsurprisingly, the Donkey Kong creator didn't go into much more detail. "The Revolution will have an interesting interface. We're investing a lot of money into the [development of the] interface, and it's still not finalized," said Miyamoto.

Despite Miyamoto's comments, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata reiterated his confidence in the next-gen console. "We expect that you will be surprised with the Revolution's controller," he said, smiling.

Nice to know they're having a grand time making it. Hopefully they'll finish it before next spring.

if it is the Gamecube controller again... so be it. I love the controller.

BUt they did state that the controllers would come "wireless" of the bat... so I doubt it will be.

Wavebirds.

yeah... but they wouldn't use that old technology in them... I think they run @ 900mhz.

they would use something better, figure out a better battery system, AND they couldn't abandon the rumble.

I know the technology is different. I just thought Id throw that in there. Id rather wait to hear what news Nintendo has before I start speculating.

I have a feeling it'll be some sort of configurable touchscreen sorta thing. I seem to recall reading something on IGN about how one of the Nintendo big wigs said that the controller design would take into account the differences in the NES, SNES and Gamecube controllers.
So...my silly theory is that it'll be a more or less generic shape (perhaps with a few doo-dads here or there). There won't be any actual buttons...all of them will be on the touch screen. I'm assuming there will be some preset button configurations for say the NES and SNES...perhaps even something for lefties. The interesting part comes in where individuals can move individual buttons or whatever to where ever on the controller they want it. Maybe there could even be some wild configurations for certain games too.

Now...to rain on my own parade. I doubt they do this simply because, while I think it'd be pretty neat, it'd be hard to get any GOOD controll out of a touch screen thing.

Anyhow...that's my 2 cents.

i wouldn't mind that i guess it would be pretty cool but i would kinda like to see the
gc controller again too because i liked the configurations for the games and stuff
the controlls wurr easy master and easy to play the games because it was like my hands just automatically knew
where the controls wurr

so in shorter form i guess i like the gc controller because my hands felt like they wurr right at home
when i play with it

It's not going to be anything like the GC controllers. Otherwise, why would the Revolution have a special port just for GC controllers?

I think the controllers are going to be something totally different from what we are even thinking. Nintendo does a lot of R&D on their controllers, and they've introduced a lot of great things in relation to controllers. Nintendo invented the d-pad, for instance.

I just love the look of that machine.

I jjust hope its powerful enough to compete.... I don't know why I am worrying... but I am a bit. I know I'll love it... but I am worrying about the developers still.
STupid people and stupid 3rd party companies.

I think Nintendo will come up with something that we've already heard about through all the rumours on the 'net. We've had plain ol' touchscreens, new, fancy tactile/haptic ones, gyro controllers, some kind of 3d display, some fully customisable controller that lets you clip different parts together so you can play any of the older games.

The latter point is quite interesting as someone from Nintendo (probably Reggie) said that we've to think about that [last point]. In fact, gonna quickly hunt the article down...ah, here's the quotes:

"If you just think about it, we're going to have the ability through wireless internet to download all your great games from NES, SNES, N64...Think about it - each of those controllers are different. How are you gonna play? That captured some of the imagination of what our controller needs to be able to do, and certainly as you get into the meat of that type of innovation with the developers, their eyes truly light up because they start to imagine what's possible with that kind of configuration, which is vastly different than a sheer horsepower kind of game."

And thanks to the warning system ("Warning - while you were typing a new reply has been posted. You may wish to review your post.") I can now reply to Bluevoodu's post :D

I believe that the console will be powerful enough and not as far behind as the majority of PS2 games look in comparison to GC and Xbox games, if it is indeed the weakest.

The third-party situation is obvioulsy an unknown, but I have a feeling that if the console is the equivalent of the DS, then it will get developer support. That it will be quick and cheap to develop for is another infuential factor in this. Also, in the article linked, Reggie says that he's shown the controller to third-parties and they were impressed. Hopefully that equates to games in the future.

They probably put those GC ports for a couple of reasons. First to play the GC games with the original controller, two, to use a different controller other than a wireless one, and three, just in case they dont come up with a controller by the time the Revolution is ready for release.

Just a thought...

If you're going to be able to play 4 generations of games on this system, might the controller be a culmination of 4 different designs? Perhaps with buttons all around the controller and multiple ways to hold it?

Here's some more Revolution mock up controllers.
http://www.aussie-nintendo.com/full.php?subaction=showfull&id=1121905911&archive=&start_from=&ucat=4

I think the first one looks very nice. Having blank buttons is a great idea. As for the second one Nintendo already confirmed that the controller will not have a touch screen so there is no way that controller will look like the real Revolution controller.

I really like that first one, plus I think the concept is cool. Creating custom control schemes would be awesome when trying to accomplish things.

The second one had tempatures on it.  As intresting a that may be, it'd get a bit cold walking through Phendara Drifts in Metroid Prime or hot through Magmoor Caves.
