Online Gaming Free!!!

Read an article on gamespot saying that Sony is planning on making gaming online free. It seems they are really trying to find a way to beat Microsoft. I'll make an edit with adress to the article later.

Even if it is $500..it'll sell like wildfire...but that would be a really smart move making online gaming free. It would help overlook some of the price for the system.

did you ever see those guys who stand in line buy a new game system and just smash it? I forget the site...but they bought a brand new 360 went in front of all the people waiting in line and demolished it! They did it with the PS2 and I'm guessing the PS3

I doubt that free online play alone with the heavy price tag on the system will give help much..the 360 already has free online.

DBP...what you just said has nothing to do with this conversation

Im not positive about this, but i think that there will be a $50 fee for online on Xbox 360.

can somebody back me up on this one? :

It comes with the silver membership for free. If you want to play your games online then you have to pay for the gold membership.

Free online may tip ps3 in their favour. But 360 is on top of that allready!? I'll be thinking about this one.

Maybe, if sony make it free, microsoft will take advantage of this. What if sony are doing this to get microsoft into a trap. What if they are planning something big. What if Microsoft is doing the same thing! The competitions heating up.

Smells like an old fassioned price war. But I think Sony will be at the losing end if they go through with it. My reasoning?? Microsoft has a reputation for good online gaming. And Sony doesn't. And Sony is already losing major coin with the retail prices being upside down compared to the cost.

The safest and best way for Sony to build their online gaming is to charge the same as Microsoft, release some high quality software and let the fans decide.

Sony: Free Online Means Free Online

Date Posted: 7 Hours ago

Since Sony's Pre-E3 press conference rumors have been making the rounds on forums, fueled by the speculation of Microsoft pundit "Major Nelson" and fans of his show, that Sony would not be including online gaming as part of their "Basic Community Services", which would be free to any PS3 owner.

The basis of this statement was that Kaz Hirai, during the press conference, ran a slide that did not include online gaming as part of the "Basic Community Services". Although he did list the features on the slide as features "beyond just gaming", confusion still arose and Sony's plans were called into question.

Today however, a PR Manager from Sony Computer Entertainment America reportedly stated that gaming would be free, stating: "Please note that online gaming will be free right out of the box."

Whether or not this statement was actually made by SCEA has come into question however. After contacting SCEA PR to inquire as to the nature of their statement, PS3Portal was told that they did "not want to comment at this time" on whether or not the statement is an accurate representation of their online stance.

Sony has touted free online as an advantage over Microsoft's free XBox LIVE account, called a "Silver" account, which does not include online gaming as one of its services. The pricing structure for premium and downloadable content has still not been outlined.

It is also important to note that Sony is not stopping developers from charging a fee for online play, and that many MMO's will likely still require a subscription fee to play.

Editor's Note: Paragraph four was added at 5:04 Pacific Standard Time after an inquiry to Sony Computer Entertainment.

Good the two systems I'm gonig to get are going to have free online gaming. That is totally awesome. Now 360 is totally thrown out the window for me.

yeah... like the DS .. the Wii will be online free.  Honestly, the DS online service is pretty good.

Regardless though... I don't think the PS3 will sell like hot cakes at $600 for the good package ($500 for the cheapest).  Free online is a good though... and I think online play should be free (we get it for the PC free.. and I guess I've never really paid to play except PSo 1/2 on the Gamecube).

Isn't the Ps2 online service free now anyway?
