Playstation 3: Psx/Ps3 Software Emulation versus Actual Chips on Board?

Ok... so I've heard that the PS3 is going to software emulation of Psx and Ps2 games. Am I correct? They are yanking the actual installed chips in favor of the software.

What I want to know is... which way is better. I assume chips are, but technically... which is better to have?

AND does anyone know the model numbers of the chipped versions (that Sony supposively has stopped producing Now)? Or at least the Model number of the software version?

I am very curious which way is better though.

Having the actual chip is better because you'll get 100% emulation, whereas with software not all games might work. For example, like the 360.

Don't know serial numbers though.

I think having the chip is easier. The 360 only does emulation and it's still not 100% backwards compatible with Xbox games.

They are pulling the chip. The 80gig model is going for software emulation, a stupid move I think because software emulation never covers all games *cough360cough*

Hi guys, I'm the proud owner of an 80GB model and I'm here to prove that the emulation chip inside mine rocks. Don't forget, that Sony's website does a very depth check via a search engine to tell you problems with many games.

Yet from my research this past week, it's actually far superior than the Xbox 360's Backwards compatiblity by far. For Example, find a copy of Mega Man Anniversary Collection on Xbox and PS2....play both on the PS3 and Xbox 360...you'll be amazed. The Xbox 360's 2D emulation is very weak, while the PS3 seems to adore anything old school and new school.

Genma Onimusha (from Xbox playing on Xbox 360) Vs. Onimusha (from PS2 playing on PS3)...is a major leap too....the Xbox 360 has many lines striking through the menu screen. While the PS2 looks astounding with no problems what so ever.

Another feature I'm really admiring is the fact that mimics the PS2/PS1 memory card to a tease when you create the files and you can put the PS2 or PS1 game in "Full Screen" mode for a rich and gorgeous picture. (Mega Man X4 from the PS1 is a prime example of how sweet it looks)

However, every single 2D game I've tested with my 80GB works beautifully. It loves CVS2, Capcom Classics, Taito Legends 2, Art of Fighting Anthology, Fatal Fury Battle Archives, etc. She loves Guilty Gear, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, and yes even the Street Fighter Alpha Anthology.

I know it sucks having an emulator over the actual chip, but Sony is hard at work to make sure each game works properly.

Here's the Compatible Status link, you just type in the name of the game and click on which PS3 you have, and it will tell you in detail what it may have.

Now if you were to say to me "Well Mega, which one would you perfer?" I'd say stick with the 60GB. I picked the 80GB because of the extra space and the free game of Motorstorm, plus all I care about is newer games on my PS3.

So to break it down,

60GB = EE Chip
80GB = Emulator
40GB = No BC

well... supposively the software can help with older resolution updates (upscaling I believe). BUT this might have been covered in a ps3 update anyway...

You are correct and man that resolution is SEXY! Play Soul Calibur 2 or 3....it's to die for. Especially God of War II....mmm mmm good

OK OK... but is that hardware or software? :)

and is that including in the software emulator or updates to the Ps3 system?

Hardware by far since you put it in the proper video mode HDMI or Component, which ain't too bad when you think about the fact you're using an emulator. Yet the recent update patch to the PS3 Ver. 1.93 added more to that in terms of resolution.

So will resolution be a problem either way? (Meaning Psx/Ps2 Chipped versus Software Emu for older games)?

It's the same on each, see at work we have 60GB models and since Im the only guy who has the 80GB. I've been closely studying them and there isn't much of a difference. You get the same type of resolution no matter which you choose between the two.

I guess that leaves the question... which games don't work with the software emulation on the Playstation 3?

that's a Q no one is able to answer yet (it seems)...

True, so far all the games that I like or any other game that my friends can mention will work. Just think of any game you wish and type it into the search engine from the link I provided to find out the answer.

I know Elemental Gearbolt from PS1 does not work

cool. The 60 gig is $500, right?

I might get one of those someday in the future. I have to clear some stuff out of the way... but that is going to be the last of my purchasing. I want to play Socom...

If you can find a 60 gig, 'cause most, if not all, have probably been cleared out.

yes sir, $500 for the 60GB. If you wanna hit me up online or anything, let me know :) my ID Tag is the same as this name.

Yet yeah, FHQ is right. I don't know how much time the 60GB has left, I did hear that Sony shipped out the last of those models. Yet heck, they are so easy to find lol

Okay got some crummy news. Only game I have found from the PS2 that will not work on the PS3 80GB model....Devil May Cry 3 :( I got the Devil May Cry Collection today and the PS3 rejected it.

However, it can play fine on the 60GB
