PS1 games on PS2 - need help

I recently picked up FF7 and am playing it on my PS2. However, when I get to the save point the game tells me there is no memory card detected - do i need a PS1 memory card to save data when playing a PS1 game on a PS2?
 
Yes, you sure do, I should know, I have several PS1 games. The PS2 memory cards have different coding or something.
 
Yep. PSX memory cards for PSX games. But beware, the PS2 does not like multiple-disk PSX games very much. Or it just could be mine. It tends to give up on the video and just plays audio after a while.
