"PSN is not an acceptable substitute for Xbox Live..."

From today's Penny Arcade -

PSN is not an acceptable substitute for Xbox Live, though it's often said to be, because in order to appear reasonable it is sometimes necessary to say things which are untrue.

Bold words. Although I'm still going to get a PS3 and switch to online play there out of principle. How does PSN compare to XBL?

[The Ultimatum]

What? What does XBL even offer? The only thing I can see that is evident may be a few thousand more players for shooters but otherwise its not like the PS3 versions of said shooters sale abysmally. In fact for many of the games with online play, both consoles versions sell just within thousands of each other.

Maybe one can make the claim that the XBL service allows for the downloads of stuff to be faster since it seems to simultaneously download and install instantly, but then the difference is really mere minutes so is that something to say it is not acceptable?

There are other minor features, like leaving feedback after playing someone in a few games and such, but you can still send messages to people on the PSN. Maybe the claim that all xbl players would have headsets since I guess the console was bundled, but then people on PS3 are growing in number with headsets though not everyone wants to hear it.

So for the cost of 0$ you get access to download all demos, play any game online, and such, and for me, that is pretty awesome. I dont like paying subscription for online gaming when I already pay monthly just to access the internet for high rising costs.

I think the overall interface of XBL is a lot smoother than PSN. but i dont have to pay for PSN so it pretty much wins by default

Pretty much the price is the only key issue here. XBL only offers earlier access to some content at times, yet if you're never in a hurry than it will arrive on PSN sooner or later.

The only redeeming quality of XBL that I can see is Netflix (Yes, I know it's free in other platforms.) And if you like sports and have a participating ISP, ESPN. The other point Penny Arcade had was that you have the ability to chat to anyone, whenever. You don't have to be in the same game. It's not a feature that I use a lot personally but it's there and is cool when you do use it.

i thought you could do that on the ps3 too...

Cross game chat? Not yet...they're sure taking their time, but it's going to be in a firmware update.

Yeah that is the biggest demanded feature for the PS3 still.

I wish PS3 allowed you to listen to music while you played a game like the 360. That's what I really want. :-\

It does have that feature but it's set by the developers. So far, I believe, only first party Sony games allow custom soundtracks.

I dont think the lack of cross game video chat and developers decided custom soundtracks is enough of a difference to say that the two services are not comparable. Even with an xbox for over a year, I never utilized both features.

The netflix without disc is coming to ps3 this fall and ps3 will have that sports stuff and could view sports in 3d.

Oh, thanks for telling me that! I didn't know that. Thanks! :D

I'm just lucky I have my computer in my room for that reason. :D

PS3 has Netflix, Creepin.

But Xbox just seems to go that extra mile over PSN. Now, is it worth the margin of $60? That's where lines get drawn.

I don't think they should've upped the price for everybody. The extra things they're adding to make it $60 should be like an optional upgrade for those who are interested.

Believe me, I know. :)

That's how I feel. Like I mentioned in the other thread, I was willing to defend XBL at $50 because it's been that price for many years, but no longer.

PSN is free, so it's a better deal. The problem for me, though, is that the 360 had a good head start. I have very few friends who do not own a 360, and while more of my friends own PS3s now than say, a year ago, there's still enough of that head start that most of my friends end up with multiplayer multiplatform games on the 360 because everyone else has them on the 360.

If I didn't mind playing with strangers, the PS3 would probably win hands down (except for 360 exclusives like Reach and Gears 3) especially with XBL's price increase. Unfortunately it's been my experience that most strangers are d-bags and so I prefer to play online with friends. Most of which are mostly on XBL.

That will probably change now, though.

QFT.

I don't think it'll change. Judging from the feedback of others from the 5 forums I read per day. It's $10 extra. Seriously, how many of us burn $10 a week? It's not gonna hurt us.

When it comes to PS3, I only play with Strubes or my old high school buddy. That's it. Everyone else on my list like Aya-kun, Zidart, Frodus or my ex-boss. I'll play a fighting game for 1-2 days and take a break by playing a PS1 classic or a PSN game.

As for Xbox 360. I'm surrounded by Mai, Aleeock, Spartan, Mastermario, Aya-Kun as well, CreepinDeth, my buddy from a game store, my co-workers, and so much more. It's more fun when you have awesome friends like these dying to play Halo Reach or Gears of War 3 or Dead Rising 2 or the next Call of Duty.

So yeah, Mai hit it on the nail with, "that the 360 had a good head start". I mean I would LOVE to have more people on PS3 by far, but I'm not gonna drag people away from their favorite consoles.
