PSP, Anyone?

Ever since release, the PSP has suffered a lot of hate. How do people around here like it? I personally think it is a great idea, but needed work at the start. It didn't have many good UMD's in the first year or so. It did get some pretty cool games for it eventually, however, a lot were just ports from the PS2/1.
What really sealed the deal with the PSP for me, was UMD movies. I don't even think they make them anymore, but when I still had a working PSP, I loved them. Go to the doctor and just pop one in in the waiting room.
I personally love the PSP, I just need to get a new one. Do any of you have one, or like it?

I think that fits the PSP perfectly. Home console quality graphics and gameplay is a great idea, but it just wasn't executed well by Sony. The biggest problem, in my mind was the fact that Sony put only one analog stick on the PSP. Sony didn't seem to realize that two analog sticks are crucial in almost every genre out there, except for maybe racing and puzzle games. So basically, 90% of the games put on the PSP ended up with awkward controls. The only other major mistake they made was choosing the UMD disc format. UMD movies flopped, they added loading times, and they caused PSP games to be far more expensive than they should have been.

Had it not been for those two mistakes (dropping the second analog especialy), the PSP could very well be the leader of the handheld market. If they fix these problems, I would definitely want to pick up the next Sony handheld because having a home console experience on a handheld is a great concept, and I think they could really nail it next time around.

The PSP's very easy to use now that I've finally tried one for over an hour. Graphics are very smooth and the frame-rate on the games I've tried has been crisp. The battery life isn't such a problem for me as it is for others. The games that have been coming out for it lately have made it a very tempting buy for me as well.

Meh.

That pretty much sums it up, IMO.

Most of the great games for the PSP are also available on other consoles, making the PSP unnecessary unless it's your only system.

Battery life is too short, and it doesn't help that the battery drains even when you're not using it.

In order to make their next handheld competitive, they are going to have to fix the issues with the current system, and get more software support, especially exclusive games.

See, the battery life doesn't really bother me. I'm not going to be gone somewhere without an electrical outlet to charge my PSP for a ton of hours on end, or if I am, chances are, I'm out with friends and having fun.

I don't know, maybe I just have a bad battery, but it seems like I'm lucky if I get more than 6 hours of play time on one charge. And the whole draining while I'm not using it...It irritates me to no end when I am playing a game, there's about half charge left, and then for whatever reason I don't play for a week or so, go back to play it and the battery's dead.

I might just be spoiled by the DS's battery life, though, and that the charge on the DS doesn't drain when you're not using it.

She's right. The battery life on the PSP is downright brutal, especially when I used to play FF Tactics. It makes me wonder why they would release lengthy RPG's on a portable at times. If it's only going to tease you when that red light appears.

I just realized, notice our gaming lives are focused around what color light you should be seeing in order to enjoy your game. We're lab mice sadly. Green means go, Red means death or Sleep Mode, Orange means reading data, and Blue means you have a message....Lab Mice follow the same pattern to get the food pellet...makes me wonder if that poor mouse gets 3RR's...then what...probably panics...anyways...

DS and GBA had pretty good length when it came to battery life, but I personally don't like portables as much as I used to, because of issues like this.

At first I thought the game made a difference, but it seems that something like Puzzle Quest is just as taxing on the battery life as something like Tales of Eternia.

Yup you guessed right, you see some PSP games require more battery life than others. Which Sony never really discusses much. I learned this during my years at my company and now that I know how to repair these systems it's pretty easy to see why. That LCD screen is pretty sensitive when it comes to light, if a game is too bright, it will drain the battery rapidly, but luckily Sony was nice to add in the brightness adjustment.

Maybe they should call Nintendo and see how they do it.

The volume makes a difference as well. Even the DS drains faster when I listen to games at full volume, which is why I usually don't turn the sound up. Same thing with the PSP.

I usually only play the PSP for an hour at a time, when I'm on my lunch at work. ^_^

Yeah volume has been the enemy of every portable since the B&W GameBoy days. I remember turning down the volume just to squeeze in a good 15 minutes before I could finish an area in Zelda Link's Awakening ^.^

The DS Lite can play GBA games at the lowest brightness for over 30 hours straight. :/

Awesome game right there, mine's battery is just starting to go since it was an original copy.

i'm not a big handheld gamer. but i'm starting to like the ds more and more. Mainly for the mario games that are on it. I'll probably just keep the psp though. even though it don't get played it still has some movies on it.
