... Play with Those Who Buy Boxed Copies in Mulitplayer?

Just wondering because if I find a good PC game deal for a boxed copy I would still like to play with friends.

yes you can..you have two options

if the game is avaliable on steam, you can use your product code in conjunction with the "Activate product on steam" in "my games".

you can also choose "add a non steam game"

now the non-steam game part may not be fully supported by steam (As far as server lists, join in game compatability, etc), but you can still use the steam chat function and the like.

On games made by Valve, it works. For example, I bought Counter-Strike: Source, The Orange Box, and Counter-Strike Anthology, and all are fully compatible with Steam.

However, I also have Quake III: Arena, Farcry 2 and Bioshock, which are games available on Steam, but, I cannot get them to sync up with Steam.

I haven't been able to use the Activate Product on Steam link successfully with non-Valve games.

Here you go:

Note: Only the retail third-party games listed above can be registered through Steam. No other third-party games can be registered and downloaded using Steam.

Thus, the games I mentioned, Quake III: Arena, Farcry 2, and Bioshock, though they are available on Steam, they are not games that can be accessed via the Steam network using a retail box version.
