RAM prices?

Anybody have a theory on why RAM has gone up in price so fast lately? Some sets I used to see going for $25-27 are now going for $50+, and this is just in a matter of a couple months. I'd understand if it was just DDR2 as the switch to DDR3 is coming, but DDR3 has also been going up in price. Economy? Shortages? Something else?

Computer sales have picked up since the release of Windows 7. Thus manufactures have been buying up a lot of components, including memory. More demand means prices go back up. The low prices were always a temporary thing.

Hmm that makes sense. I had read today it had something to do with the Taiwanese Government but I couldn't really make sense of it. I just wish I had known that the prices were going to go back up, I would have stocked up and made some profit reselling them now.

From what I've been reading there is a shortage of DDR2. RAM manufacturers have been focusing on DDR3 and slowed down their production of DDR2. They can't keep up with the demand.

I am wondering if DDR2 price will ever be as low as it was a few months ago? Probably not I think. I know DDR shot way up for a while but it has come back down now. I guess mostly I was wondering why DDR3 would go back up in price. But what Poly said makes sense. That little transition period would have been a great time to build my new PC. Just bad timing on my part!

You can expect this to get worse. It always does when the new memory type comes out. It even happened with the old DIMMs and SIMMs when SD came out.
