Reasons for the disappearing 80GB PS3 (Seems fishy..)

MegaDrive20XX

Segatron Genesis... call me the wizard.
Best Buy isn't the only retailer getting rid of 80GB systems. GameDaily BIZ has heard from an unnamed corporate source (that isn't Best Buy) that something is definitely "afoot" but he "can't really comment (until the 80GBs are gone.)"

Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey who told GameDaily, "Sony is likely dumping the 80GB version because it has failed to meet internal sales projections." He added, "A recessionary environment will likely punctuate the 80GB version's relative and absolute retail sales disappointment. The recently released 40GB version is getting traction at retail, suggesting backward compatibility takes a backseat to the console's price point for current buyers." The successful sales of the 40GB system, versus the 80GB package, is likely refocusing Sony's efforts in this generation of hardware.

Of course, Sony is keeping mum on the entire situation. "SCEA does not comment on rumor and/or speculation. We have not made any announcements regarding manufacturing."

Update: GameDaily goofed? Well, this is interesting. We just heard from The NPD Group who told us, "In the last quarter (when both were on the market), the 80GB sold more units than the 40GB." When pressed for a more exact breakdown of the sales data between the two SKUs, NPD said they could not provide that. It's certainly a surprise to us, however, that the more expensive 80GB would have sold more than 40GB, which many have attributed the PS3 sales spike to.

Hmm..the 80 GB sold more than the 40 GB. Guess some people got sensible and realized it wasn't the most expensive thing in the world.

I would rather pay more and have backwards compatibility.

But you already have a PS2. Not worth paying an extra $100 if you don't have to, but it is nice to have, I agree with you there.

I do, but space constraints make it less convenient to keep multiple systems out. If I could get the BC PS3 and be able to put my PS2 away, I would prefer that.

@ Mega, part of the reason for discontinuing the 80G might be to replace it with a 120G version that comes with the Dualshock 3.

http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3165805

Last week, we reported that Best Buy had leaked word that the 80GB PlayStation 3 model was being discontinued. Then earlier this week, the plot thickened as a tipster hinted towards it being replaced by a 120-160GB unit. Today we can add another ingredient to this tasty rumor stew, as IGN reports that a GameStop conference call to retailers once again added more credit to it. After the call, multiple insiders (with no apparent sense of company confidentiality) confirmed that the 80GB unit is no longer being made, and a 120GB replacement will be coming with a Dual Shock 3 controller.

With two unrelated retailers and a fairly reliable tipster all pointing the same direction, the rumor seems all but confirmed at this time. Lately, this has been a pattern for Sony announcements, with evidence and leaks growing to a point that any denial would be ludicrous. Then Sony denies it anyway, and announces it a week or two later. Keep an eye out, because if history is any indication, this could go on for a while.

Because backwards compatibility was the only thing left out.

Gawd. Who needs that much space.

120GB worth?

*looks at the amount of data on my harddrive itself*

68.9 GBs of Anime
4.87 GBs of Movies
around 10 GBs of Movies that me and my friends have made
16.7 GBs of Tv Shows (Its just 4 Seasons of Scrubs)
and 81.43 GBs of Music.

Answer you're question?

How much of that would you actually transfer to your PS3 and how many people do you think have harddrives like that?

I would try to take all the music and most of the Anime. A 500GB harddrive costs like $100 now if you know where to look. Alot of people can have harddrives like this.

Yeah, and odds are the people who need all the space know where to look, and since you can put most harddrives on, why jack up the price for something most people won't use?

think about it. The 360 came with a 20GB (12GBs really) and then people were downloading Arcade games and demos and trailers and stuff like that. Even with the size limit of 256MB(?) for Arcade on XBLA they needed to upgrade the harddrives. Now, with the PSN you can download loads of full games that can have no size limit (cause that's how PSN rolls), now add that to demos, trailers, soon to be movies, other media sources, and the fact that games access the harddrive to have less stress on the data disc. And there you have your 120GBs

And you delete stuff you don't want. Cleared up space.

Exactly, and having way too much space and being forced to pay extra is an inconvenience.

so... w/ everyone's comments... it seems like a point was missed.

Why are the 80 Gig's disappearing?

†B†V† :hat

You'll never be happy with the PS3. :lol

I agree with Fr0dus though...You can transfer over a bunch of stuff onto your PS3 and customize it...allowing for the extra space to come into play. If you don't want it, don't pay for it. Simple enough?
