RIP The Floppy Disk! YES they were still being made! 1981-2011!

In 1981, Sony brought the world the 3.5-inch floppy disk, which for nearly two decades would stand as the PC world's preferred means of storage. In 2011, after 30 years on the market, Sony will cease production of these disks.

Despite the advent of superior mediums like CDs, DVDs and flash drives, the format lived on well into the 21st century both for owners of older PCs and Macs and for storage purposes, many people's old documents, images and most importantly games still taking up megabytes on floppies the world over.

The time has finally come, however, for Sony, the 3.5-incher's creator, to pull the plug, disclosing the decision to end production earlier this week.

I'll remember the format not for its convenience or reliability - two things I thought due to its small size and flimsy nature it never had - but for how it revolutionised video gaming around school playgrounds and offices the world over by being so easy to copy.

:o :o :o Wow!

Not only do I have a Samsung 3.5" floppy drive on this computer, but I also actually still have a floppy for school documents that I used up until getting a USB flash drive last year.

havent used a floppy disk since installing windows 3.1 and dos 6.2.2 in my operating systems class last year. before that, i think it was sometime in high school or jr high.

I used to use the Floppy Disks all the time for old documents and backing up ZZT games back in the mid-to-late 90's, but now Floppy Disk Drives are no longer on today's computers since Windows Vista came out in '06 when we're better off with USB Flash Drives and Portable Hard Drives with way bigger storage space.

yep, those were the days. I mostly just use the 250MB Zips now.

Ah, I didn't think anyone else still used those. I still have about five of those suckers. They were just so unreliable. At least they were better than Jaz discs.

I only use a couple. When I was going to graphic design school, they provided us with them. So a lot of my work is on Zips. The only Zip drive I could find was this weird iomega drive that was meant to be used as a photo viewer for your TV. But works the same as any other Zip drive. Just with S-Video and composite connections.

lol at Jaz drives. Never actually saw those in the wild. Just on the internet.

One of my previous jobs had a ton of the 250 drives lying around so I scored. The Jaz discs were funny as they would shatter if you dropped them and they were super expensive.

I pretty much stuck with the 1.44 Mb floppies for transferring papers to school so I could use the school printers. When I finally started using media files within Powerpoint presentations, the size limitation got to be a problem.

USB flash drives are definitely the way to go. See ya floppies! It was a ride, but we've got to move onward!
