Rock Band confirmed for Wii

January 31, 2008 - In a third-quarter conference call today, Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello confirmed that a Wii version of Rock band is forthcoming.

Riccitiello mentioned the game at the end of the call's question-and-answer session. There was no release date given, but Riccitiello referred to the "coming launch" of a Wii version of the game.

There's been speculation about a Wii installment of Rock Band's since the game was announced. In April 2007, Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopulos said a Wii-specific version of the title would be coming out in the future.

"We will, at some time, bring Rock Band to every [important] platform," Rigopulos said at the time, adding that Harmonix would optimize future versions of Rock Band to fit the strengths of the platform. "I think the Wiimote is something that holds enormous promise."

Despite Rigopulos' strong statements, no official announcement had been made about a Wii version of Rock Band until Riccitiello's off-hand statement in today's conference call.

After the call, we contacted an EA rep for more details, but all we got was a confirmation that, indeed, a Wii version of Rock Band is coming.

There's still no release date (let alone any word on instruments or how additional song content might work on the Wii), but we'll let you know as soon as more info presents itself.

Good news for Wii-only owners. ^_^

I wonder if it will come with special songs. Some Nintendo themed stuff might be cool.

I probably won't get it since I've already got the 360 version, but it will really depend on what they offer in the Wii version.

No DLC.
No online play (knowing Nintendo)
Probably have to shove a Wii remote into every single instrument.
Downgraded graphics
No Friends lists

Lets face it people, it will be a port of the PS2 version of the game, as all Wii games pretty much are.

It'll have online play, if GH3 can do it, so can Wii. It's pretty easy.

Yet yeah, you're gonna have to fit a Wii Remote in each device....however, don't forget the Wii has 2 USB ports in the back.

Graphics will take a nose dive of course.

No no, not just friends only, but an annoying new friend's code to enter in...yet AGAIN ;D

There you go, Nintendo, that's the easiest thing the customer could ever ask for! :D

Prove it. DLC has been confirmed for GH3 Wii... why can't Rock Band do it? (source)

Uhh, Guitar Hero 3?

Probably have to shove a Wii remote into every single instrument.
I really hope this happens, due to the fact that it cuts down the price of the instruments. I have four wiimotes, so this works great. I'm praying for this.

Downgraded graphics
Obviously

No Friends lists
Every single WFC title to date on the Wii has friends lists.

Honestly, Hines... I don't get it. Why must you be so pessimistic about things? You wonder why people argue with you... but you're constantly bringing up negative sides to things. I'm honestly looking forward to this, and I have a 360. The price will be cut by a large amount due to most of the circuitry being in the Wiimotes.

EDIT: got rid of "everything"... you aren't pessimistic about everything

Just because Guitar Hero will do it, doesn't mean Rock Band will. They are two different games by different developers. It's a huge effort to make DLC for a Wii game, which is why no developers have done it yet, and saying that Rock Band will do it just because Guitar Hero III did is just being naive.

You are a very small portion of the Wii crowd who actually has four Wii Remotes, so the instruments will have to be USB. The only way they could be wireless is through the Wii remote.

By friends lists I mean one list for every game, not a different one for each game. But that stems back to Nintendo's online strategy, which doesn't belong in this thread.

I'm not pessimistic, I'm realistic.

It goes without saying that both games are based upon the same gameplay... hit notes musically (exception being microphone on Rock Band). I'm not saying Rock Band will do it; I'm only arguing that it can do it. Obviously, Rock Band can do whatever it wants do and doesn't have to do everything the same as GH3. I'm just saying that since it's been done, the possibility is definitely there for Rock Band to incorporate it. Such is undenyable fact; to say Rock Band can't do it even though another game on the same system can is foolish.

I never once said that Rock Band will do it; again, I only said that it has the possibility to do it, since GH3 can do it. You were denying that such features will be available on the Wii version based upon zero evidence, so I countered with evidence of such technology being doable on the Wii. To say that Rock Band will do it is absolutely naive; I agree with you in saying that, because none of us are developing the game and thus have no proof of which to verify such a statement. I never once said such a thing, though. Should they decide not to incorporate the things mentioned, that's their problem, not Nintendo's.

You are a very small portion of the Wii crowd who actually has four Wii Remotes, so the instruments will have to be USB. The only way they could be wireless is through the Wii remote.

I understand that not everyone has four Wiimotes. But for those who do, this is a Godsend. Cheaper price = happy.

Oh, I understand what you mean now. Yes, then I agree with that... there won't be a friends list.

I'm not pessimistic, I'm realistic.

Realistic? Realistic? How does denying that a game won't do something simply because you believe it is so with no evidence qualify as realistic? All the technology needed to incorporate the elements (save for friends list/graphics) is there; you're denying it based upon some fact that I'm unaware of. You provided zero evidence other than your own opinion. That's not being realistic. It's expecting the worst, and that's pessimism. Look, man. I'm not mad at you. I want us to be cool... I just don't understand why you are saying this.

Good points Kirby.

So Hines, what you're trying to say, is you hate every console now? Nobody can seem to please you. Maybe you should just sell them all off.

I love the 360 and Wii, and I like the Ps3, and would love to own one. All I'm saying is that Rock Band doesn't seem like a very good fit for the Wii.

I still haven't met anyone who plays Rock Band/Guitar Hero for the graphics, so I see no reason in caring about this.

The least important of my points.

It shouldn't have even been a point. You're going to be looking at multi colored rectangles anyways, so why does this even come into play?

I don't understand you anymore. For someone who doesn't want Nintendo to suck in 2008, this could only be a positive for Nintendo. This means that better games are coming out for the Wii. And who cares if this is a port? Of course it's going to be a port, regardless of which system they port it from, it's still going to be a port. Why does that matter? It's a multiplatform game. There are people out there who don't/can't own a 360/PS3, so why should Wii owners miss out? It's not a game that requires graphics horsepower, or great enemy AI, it's about the music.
