RPG Suggestions?

Hello!

Before I take to the internet in search for some new RPG titles I was hoping to get some suggestions from you all.

In no particular order these are my favorite RPG's.

- Lunar 1 & 2
- FFX
- FFXII
- Oblivion
- Zelda Windwaker
- Zelda Twilight Princess
- Mass Effect

What attracts me to these games are the in-depth storylines, the developed and interesting characters, the exciting gameplay and overall maturity of each game. To give an example of a RPG that I think lacks maturity is Kingdom Hearts. Sure, it was fun; But the storyline, dialogue, and characters were nowhere near as mature as, say, FFXII. Also, because its fresh in my mind, FFXIII is an example of what I think is just a horrible RPG. Mostly due to the cheesy characters and uninteresting story.

What I am craving right now is a game with a well-fleshed out storyline, interesting plots, and good characters. I love fantasy-based games more than sci-fi, but I wouldn't rule out playing a decent sci-fi RPG if it looked appealing. Mass Effect was excellent, but I don't like shooters very much. I'm also not so much into anime-ish games unless they were developed as well as the Lunar games were. I definitely enjoy a little bit of romance but I don't need it. What I loved about FFXII is how it could invoke emotion within me at certain points in the game. Obviously I haven't played very many RPG's, but FFXII is for sure my favorite and if anyone can recommend a game similar to that or to what my interest are, I would be so grateful!

Thanks in advance for your opinions =)

Edit: I forgot to mention, please only recommend titles for the PS3, PS2, Xbox, or Wii. I'm currently in no mood to play games on the PC or DS.

Edit: Already played Fable and Dragon Age.

If you liked Mass Effect you'll love Star Wars:Knights of the old Republic. It has everything you are looking for. I was never into Sci-Fi type of stuff but it is one of my favorite games of all time. Tales of Symphonia is another great one. I've also heard Tales of Abyss is excellent but I have not personally played that one.

Since you mentioned Final Fantasy X and XII, Final Fantasy XIII for the PS3 or 360 should catch your interest. Of course, it has a new battle system, new story line, and new everything else. I have heard that the story really focuses on each individual on the group and that the story really gets good after about 40 hours into the game.

Regarding the battle system, from the review of FFXIII on X-play, the game encourages experimentations and trying to handle battles that you may not be prepared to take yet. The game does not penalize you for losing battles from what I understand.

I would recommend any version of final fantasy IV and the wii sequel, that is one classic RPG and my favorite FF game (up there with IX, VIII and XIII)

But X2 is right. if you want a game or a series that focuses on characters and has a really in-depth storyline the Tales of Series is RIGHT for you. Tales of Symphonia and Tales of the abyss are my 2 most favorite games mostly because of the way the characters develop through the course of the story and how nothing is ever black and white, good and evil, there is always a motivation for everyone to behave a certain way. I know they are animeish games but I assure you the level of depth of the characters and how their personalities develop throughout the story is outstanding. Characters you hate at first will grow on you and villains who are doing atrocious actions may gain your sympathy.

also the tales series boasts a great battle system that is like a mixture of a fighting game and an RPG so that makes it a bit unique.

Also if you want to try something a bit on the funny side you should try 3D dot game heroes, it is more like an old school homage of zelda games but it is focused more on humor than actual storytelling.

and if you want a mature RPG with a sci-fi setting then there is also the shin megami tensei games, that is as mature as you can find for an RPG with their dark settings and themes.

and you are right there. I found it most fun when I experimented with the game to make it more fun than simply pressing X to win all the time. So i do have to agree with X-play there

Shin Megami Tensei on PS2 is one of my all time favorites. KOTOR I and II would follow closely behind, and as others have said, if you liked Mass Effect you will love KOTOR. As far as Final Fantasy goes IV is the best for me, and I have a fond liking of IX as well. If you have an SNES or some way of playing SNES games, Earthbound is another great RPG that really stands up well still today, for its quirky storyline and odd characters/enemies.
