Silent Hill 5 to "hardcore" for Wii users.

The Freeman
In a recent interview with Wired, Silent Hill 5 composer Akira Yamaoka revealed that there are no plans to release Konami's horror sequel on the Nintendo Wii. Despite the potential for using waggle controls in the twisted world of Silent Hill, Yamaoka explained that Wii users are not 'hardcore' enough and thus, I suppose, not suitable enough an audience.

Akira Yamaoka: We're making Silent Hill 5 for next-gen consoles. Are there any other platforms besides that? [laughter]

Wired Network: There's the Wii.

AY: Ah, the Wii. Wiiiiiiiiii... Silent Hill Wii. Can we do it? Will players like it?

WN: Yeah! There's a lot of potential there, using the remote as a flashlight, or a knife...

AY: Yeah, there's potential.

WN: But no plans.

AY: No plans. The Wii user isn't a hardcore user.

So there you have it. The Wii user isn't a 'hardcore' user and that is why Silent Hill 5 won't be coming to the Wii. On the one hand, I can understand anybody's apprehension to market an adult game on the Wii, but on the other I wish this mythical hardcore/casual divide would just go away. 'Casual gaming' is a buzz-term with very little merit. You can't just tar two large sets of customers with a single brush in a convenient, black-and-white view.

With that said, I now step back and allow the rabid Nintendo fans to have their way with Yamaoka-san. He said something bad about the Wii, you know -- go get him and with many, many paragraphs!

He has a point. When I get my next Wii, I want to play Mario and Metroid and SSBB...it's just not a blood and gore system.

yeah, it just isnt family friendly!!!

but then again, we get two resident evil games, and manhunt II.

and if we have manhunt 2, we can have anything

This happened with the GameCube as well. Silent Hill 2 was suppose to come out on Cube during the release of the Xbox version back in 2001. Yet it was canned and deemed "Too violent" by Nintendo.

So the developers are saying it's not hardcore enough, so they're not going to help it become hardcore enough? >_> Someone needs a *****slap.

Even so, would this be The 1st time a Silent Hill would be on a console if wanted to? It doesn't make sense ow there could be a ManHunt and Fatal Frame on The Wii and also The legendary Resident Evil but no Silent Hill. :/

I agree, there is something odd about this picture. I just don't understand why Silent Hill would not be on a Nintendo system. Yet it did happen once, in Japan on the GBA. "Silent Hill Play Novel" which was very unusual...

The original plan was to recruit new gamers with that philosophy, doesn't mean it has to stay true the whole life span. I mean, really.

Everytime I say there's not enough hardcore games on it, people tell me "that's cause it's for the casual crowd". I don't see Nintendo breaking away from that with one or two mature rated games.

The developers made a completely new idea by making Silent Hill 4 and took chances on that but no idea for how the wii Silent Hill would be received would just throw them off from other projects that could work for wii just because they decide to say it's too hardcore. :-\

I know it's up to the developer. I just don't think they're making the right decision.

That's true, but I guess we'll never know if their decision is right or not until other Mature games come out for the Wii and see how they do.
