So why should you keep your original console over a system that plays it too?

MegaDrive20XX

Segatron Genesis... call me the wizard.
Why having your original console is better than an emulated “newer” system that can play your old games?

Many reasons come to mind, yet tonight I will compare to you what Halo 2 looks like on Xbox and Xbox 360 that some of you may/may not be aware of.

The minor harp I have about playing Xbox games on a 360 when I had the chance, is the ugly letter box and the emulation issues found in some certain Xbox titles. Yet Halo 2 is the only game I'm aware of that had special treatment to format on the screen perfectly, no matter which system you play it on.

Back to Halo 2. Now loading times have increased longer when I place Halo 2 on the Xbox 360 for some odd reason. Yet on the Xbox, it's much faster. The sound on the Xbox 360 is much louder and sharper compared to the Xbox, but in some cases when you are trying to escape the first part of the game of Halo 2, the awesome "I'm in outerspace echos" sound effects are gone and replaced with normal sound effects as if you were on a normal battle scene. Could be sound emulation issues, especially when Cortana is suppose to be speaking to Sgt. Johnson on a headset, instead of speaking out loud.

Color wise, everything looks brighter and prettier on Xbox 360, since emulation can't match the original. Xbox has it dark and griddy. For the record, both Halo 2's are running at 480p with component cables each.

Most bizzare graphical error I spotted was strange black triangle spots that were above me in the clouds in the second area of the game when you reach the first major city in Halo 2, which only happened on the Xbox 360. Yet after resetting the game, those odd black shapes disappeared. Microsoft has warnings on their official site about the glitches of course when you read the fine print of their backwards compatibility list of course.

Now, to recap real quick, to think out side of the "Xbox" to put it bluntly, is the main point of why, I feel you should hold onto that system. Classics are classics, but if you screw up one of your favorite games on the next-gen system you purchase, you'd say something wouldn't you? You pay good money, you just traded in your beloved PS2/Cube/Xbox for example and you find out that one or none of your particular games cannot be played.

Next time I'm going to bring up the big question, WHY are these companies doing that and offering ways to download, like Xbox 360 does or re-release their classics, like Wii does? Just remember this, NEVER EVER TRADE IN A CONSOLE! Games can be replaced at times, but some consoles cannot.

to be honest the only flaw the wii has with BC is the lack of the port for GC on-line play and to play GBA games on a TV screen.....however i never had neither and the wii still allowed me to play games like FFCC and four swords adventures which was my main concern when i bought the console.... it still pretty much plays like a gamecube when it needs to be (otherwise it plays like a wii when i play mah metroid prime trilogy :P)

"Game Shark". :lol
Well,I'm fortunate enough to have scored a 60GB PS3 when I did. It's completely backwards compatible.I understand the current ones aren't.Maybe that's why.My brother has a 360,and it seems that it costs money for every little feature.

With the way the new PS3's are, they're not 100% backwards compatible,so shelling out the little money for a PS2 just for it's titles alone are worth it to me.Awesome."FF7","GTA:SA","FF8","FF9",etc(In all fairness, some PS2 games are hard to get.)

God bless,
Kaz

I've played hundreds, if not thousands, of games of Halo 2 on the 360 and I didn't notice any flaws of any kind. Nothing worth keeping the original Xbox hooked up to my TV to play on at least. I mean, look at your list of complaints... minor sound quality reduction, minor graphical glitches (that didn't consistently happen) and slightly longer load times.

I'd like to mention that Halo 2 doesn't have load times if its the last game in your cache, by the way.

I wouldn't really call them compliments, since I tried hard to consider them observations from time to time. You are right about the cache however.

Yeah, I understand what you are saying though. There is some stuff lost in translation... but is it worth keeping the console for?

Depends on the word lost, depends on the word...translation...

Now this comparison was meant for one game, but what I'm understanding...is we need another game to prove this point. I'm on it, like a secretary after hours.

Consoles do not get tossed in my house. Emulation is fine and dandy. Updates are okay. But the feel of the original controller is unbeatable. I guess it's nostalgia. Every time I fire up the Master System or NES, I can see my original consoles and I am surrounded by my cousins again.

Heh, I taught my son how to make the NES play without blowing into the cart. Alcohol wipes work wonders!

Sounds like it's more of an issue with emulation than BC in general. If a newer system has BC, sweet, I'll use it to play my older games. If not, no biggie. The reason I would rather play Halo 2 (Not that I do, I personally can't stand Halo) on the Xbox 360 would be because I prefer that controller.

Yeah, I would agree with Dart on the controller issue except in the case of the Xbox and the 360. The Controller S was nice, but the 360 controller is smaller, sleeker, and much more comfortable while maintaining the same basic design (the only real change besides the guide button is the addition of the bumpers at the expense of the black and white buttons- a much better design choice)

I actually prefer the S controller over 360. Especially for fighters. The placement on the S Controller just felt better.
