These are truly some of the most dedicated fans of anything I have ever seen!

Lots of people continued playing Halo 2 past the midnight deadline Microsoft gave 12 days ago for discontinuing original Xbox multiplayer support. Fourteen have managed to still keep their consoles connected and running since, prolonging the game's final goodbye indefinitely.

Console overheating concerns and dropped Internet connections have whittled their numbers, but so far, neither Microsoft nor Bungie has gone in and turned off the lights. Writes Joe Campbell, who started a thread on the sit-in/tribute on the Bungie forums:

We will keep playing until we are all forcibly removed. It could be by Microsoft, Bungie, our Xbox's overheating, or just lagging out. Not for competition, not for a prize, but for the love, and memory of Halo 2.
I want to thank everyone that I've played with in the past few days, this is by far my favorite memory in all my gaming history.
A few live streams have captured several hours of footage of the Halo gamers playing long past the bell.

As of writing, the final 14 are: Agent Windex, APACHE N4SIR, sherlok 1, SieferSword, Rob2D, Detenn, z0mbie stench, Lord Odysseus11, xxMAKDADYxx, H2o Shoagie, xxBooker Dxx, DirtyCajun, AForeignObject and HiredN00bs.

These guys are quite literally risking their consoles to do this, just for the love of the game. That is awesome.

Re: Some fans die hard (14 People STILL playing Halo 2)

lol as cool as that is, these guys are in terrible need of jobs and/or girlfriends.

I was watching when they had around 53 players left. They just leave their consoles on. They do have day jobs and lives, just when they go out or go to sleep they leave the console running.

If I had xbl, I'd be in. But, I don't, so I'm not.

I do find it a bummer though that I no longer even have the option of enjoying multiplayer Halo 2 via officially supported internet connection though.

Yeah, I find it impressive that they care that much. If I had the spare time and foresight to do that, I would have totally joined them.

@ GS- Speaking of that, we should try to set up an Xbox Connect Halo 2 night sometime for the forum players.

I was still playing games online on my Dreamcast right up until about 3 years ago when I finally got rid of 56K. IIRC there are still some private servers out there for Dreamcast games as we speak, so this isn't that surprising really.

EDIT: Here we go, I knew Q3 was one of them... :D

There are six games that can still be played online. Quake III Arena and Maximum Pool are still accessible via various servers. 4x4 Evolution and Starlancer are still online through Gamespy. SEGA Swirl can be also be played online with its play by e-mail game. Phantasy Star Online has private servers where people can use the PAL version with an action replay/code breaker boot disc to bypass the online check and connect to the server.

Quake III: Arena? I am so in! I actually have Q3:Arena, Q3: Team Arena for PC, and Q3 Revolution for the PS2 as well. Oddly enough, when I tried the Q3:A demo on Steam, the graphics were much darker than the original disk based version. I compared the two and even with the same graphics settings, the Steam version was so much darker.

I don't have Vista, and have been putting off Windows 7 since apparently I cannot get the full version through school, just the upgrade version.

But, I would definitely be down for some multiplayer. Huh, should I drag my aging Xbox and two controllers to a LAN session some time?

BTW, I am still half considering getting a multi-tap for my PS2. Quake III: Revolution and Tekken Tag Tournament would actually be awesome in four player mode.

They keep an updated topic at bungie.net: http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=43235214&postRepeater1-p=1

They are now down to 13.

There IS always Halo 2 Vista too :D

dont remind me. yeah it works on vista, but i tried it on 7 and it kept crashing. im glad i only wasted $7 on it. not to mention the controls are useless. have to move your mouse like 5 times on your desk to even turn around.
