Sony patents software-based PS2 CPU emulation

Wait a minute...does this mean...

A patent discovered by Siliconera, however, suggests that Sony might be re-thinking this stance. Filed in December 2008, it's basically a patent for a method that would allow the PS3's Cell chip to translate code from the PS2's Emotion Engine. Not half-assed software emulation (which in previous PS3 models couldn't run some games), full, total replication of the functionality of the Emotion Engine.

Which means, theoretically at least, you could play any PS2 game on any PS3, regardless of the model or year of release.

Two words: YES!!

Well wait... I thought the old PS3 systems that had the hardware on board could play every game?

And if this is so... why would they have done away with backwards compatibility recently?

Great questions BV. Here's my theory on this.

First, the old PS3's, no need to worry about those since they do what they do best.

Secondly, Sony still sees profit in the PS2. They wanted to cut down on production cost of the PS3 by removing this chip and using the emulation software. However, they felt it would harm the sales of PS3 games. So taking it away was their decision.

Finally, this has got to be the biggest cluster fart in console hardware history.

Sega has had quite a few of those!

BUT, if a PS3 can have the ..I dare say operating system or BIOS? of an Emotion Engine running on the Cell chip, that would be phenominal. I'm guessing that it would take a software patch that flashes the BIOS of the system... Just kinda guessing that direction anyway... Thoughts, comments?
