To compete against WHAT?! Seriously! They have the strongest hold on the RPG market. O.O Unless I read this article incorrectly.

They're not the only big RPG makers around anymore. The Elder Scrolls series by Bethesda has gotten more and more popular. Mass Effect is widley considered to be among the best RPG's of the year as well. Namco's "Tales of" series has also hit off pretty well recently.

Perhaps they're getting a little scared of the competition? Just my theory.

Tales of won't 'hit off' until they consistently release them worldwide.

True, but don't they still have a large percentage of that market covered?

However, I agree to your statement. I do think they are in fear.

Truth.

I wonder who they'll merge with? I like their games the way they are right now. I'm hoping another merge doesn't downgrade the quality of their products.

To claim that Square has the largest hold on the RPG market is to completely wipe out the fact that there are other companies such as Namco, Bandai, Atlus, XSEED, Marvelous, and others make great games too.

Square has great games and they should be able to branch out into other partnerships with their characters, like Mario Basketball 3 on 3 which was fantastic with their addition.

I think the article means temporary partnerships with mainstream american companies.

I think they see that western RPG's are growing, as a genre. I'm thinking they feel almost threatened by them, so they want to grow to ensure that they keep their place at the top of the RPG market.

ok i know everybody will disagree with me when i say "please merge with namco-bandai XD"

and well i don't think they feel threatened by western RPGs i mean japanese RPGs never had super high sales anyway

In North America, yes, but Square-Enix was always the exception to that. If they released Final Fantasy or another high profile JRPG in the U.S, it isn't uncommon for it to sell over a million copies here. While most JRPG's struggle here, Final Fantasy sells 2 million copies. I think they want to keep that market share, which is why they want a merger.

I must stress that question... WHAT ARE THEY competing with?

Maybe they are talking "as a company" as opposed to their style of games?

that would mean that more Tales of games would be released state side if that happens, why would I disagree?

idk i always concidered namco and square-enix like my gods of RPGs so they joining together would be like a dream for me

Well, Tales of Symphonia is getting a direct sequel, which IIRC, has only happened to one another Tales Of game so far. They aren't super popular, but the series is defenitly more popular then it was 10 years ago.

I think the series is dreadfully popular if it has sold over 10million units.
A series? No. Tales of has nine released games and another nine ports/remakes. If 18 games sell 10 million copies, that means each game sold under a million units.

A company making a system has nothing to do with the quality of their games.
