Starcraft

Ares God Of War
Well I know everyone has been talking about Starcraft maps and playing multi, but I never saw a topic on the game itself.

I have never played the whole starcraft game before, I have had the demo installed many times. Im thinking about getting the Battlechest because its only 15 dollars. I know hwo everyone loves this game and it has influenced many RTS games over the years.

What my question is, how is this game compared to Warcraft 3? I like warcraft 3 but IMO it is almost impossible for me to win. Is Starcraft the same? Im pretty sure that Starcraft doesnt have an heros in it, but if I am wrong, will some one please let me know.

Anyways, Im thinking about getting this game, if anyone anything to add I would appreciate it.

The biggest problem with Starcraft IMO is resources. The Vespene gas is umlimited, but productions decreases with time, but minerals do not replenish. I suck at Warcraft 3 horribly (I've never won a game, nuff said) but I am at least average in Starcraft. I prefer custom games (user made maps) to actual battles in Starcraft. I think it is a must have because it is really cheap (like you said 15 bucks for the battle chest) and runs on almost any computer.

Thanks Spartan for the info. Who else plays Starcraft here on the boards?

I really would like an opinion from someone who has also played Warcraft 3.

I know BV has played WC3 and Starcraft. Umm, maybe Grinder too. But the limited resources thing can be good, so your opponents don't just crank out hordes of units.

Do people still play Starcraft online? Im sure there are still people playing but is it still a big online community?
I tried the demo and it seems like a lot of fun, the only thing that might stop me from buying this game is Half Life Platinum or a Nintendo DS :p

Starcraft doesnt seem to die much at all online.........people are always playing, there are always plenty of matches going at one time. Custom games can be really fun, people spend a lot of time making there own maps and rules and some of them turn out to be really fun.

Yeah, the Starcraft community is huge for its age. I haven't checked lately, but there are at least 5000 individual users on Starcraft. I would say more but I haven't been on recently. CAn anyone check?

I play starcraft. Unfortunately, someone took off with my disk some time ago so I can't reinstall it to play. I played online once in a while only with friends cuz most of the time I would wait half an hour to get like 8 peoplt together, then half will leave after the game begins, and the rest form truces with each other and its just a mess. Still, I like playing online when I can, and making my own maps. Although, my maps tend to be just hordes of resources with somethings in the way to prevent you from getting to other peoples bases right away.

But yeah, the battlechest is really worth it. I'm thinking about getting it just to replace my lost disk.

welcome to the boards :)  we hope to see you around!  Please enjoy your stay.

I'd be willing to try to play again.... but I know that it is not working too well for me.  I might try to join with my win 98 machine in one of your games.

not really........but for some reason, some XP computers dont like to work very well with playing starcraft online........its difficult to join games and they lag really really bad......

That would be fun, regular Starcraft or Brood War??

I think I lost both of mine :-\ but I'll find em when I actually want to confront my room and attempt to clean it :o.

I have played and do own both with expansions. I prefer starcraft BY FAR. The difficulty and learning curve is more geared toward the casual player rather than the uberdork with no job or social life that spends their entire day trying to get wins...

I'm not a fan of Warcraft III. Even though the single player campaigns are possible, the multi-player battles are far too focused on the heros. Starcraft lacks the ability (responsibility) of upgrading your hero to succeed in the game. It's more about defending your base, defending attacks from your opponent, expanding your base to find more resources and preventing your opponent from doing the same.

To sum it up, if you liked the demo, you'll love the full game.

right, and I am not sure why some computers don't mind it but others do.
I wonder if its a 98 to xp upgrade versus a xp fresh install or what. I have an XP fresh install....

whatever it is, Starcraft don't like it :lol and I am bummed because I LOVE playing that in Battle.net. I wish they would make a patch to change the winsock functionality for both.
