First off the starting blocks will be ATi's Radeon HD 5800 series of cards (starting with the HD 5850 and 5870), which should be hitting stores as early as next month. Nvidia's first line of DX11 cards - the GT300 range - will follow in December.

Lol exactly. Pretty ridiculous imo.

Mostly because DX10 was a bust and not worth price. Not surprised DX11 is already on its way.

DX10 is the Vista of 3D graphics.

I agree... I wonder how the next gen of ATI's will be. I have a 4870 X2 and I'm still digging that card.

As far as DX10... I am not sure why they are leaving it so soon... but I figure it has something to do with the launch of Windows 7, honestly. Win 7 supports Direct X 7, and I bet Microsoft is trying to move away from anything and everything that has to do with Vista... Including DX10.

BV, do you mean Win7 supports DX11? If I am not mistaken, I read last night (probably some source like wikipedia or something, I do not recall well enough to directly quote it) that Vista will also support DX11.

That being said, I am wondering if I should switch operating systems soon.

I use a Core 2 Duo and 4 gigs of RAM, both of which would be better supported by a 64 bit OS.

I also have an 8800gt, which is a DX10 compatible card. I am kinda wondering if to get the most out of my card Vista would be worth it.

And, with both of those being said, would 64 bit Vista Ultimate be the way to go to get the most out of my processor, RAM, and graphics card?

Vista Ultimate will not get you the most out of your processor as all version of Windows have the same code under the hood. Ultimate has maybe two or three more features than Home Premium and Professional.

In all honesty, Windows 7 is really good and fixes a lot of the problems that Vista had. I would not be surprised if it ends up being better than Vista for gaming. But there isn't really any rush to get Windows 7. I recommend getting Windows 7 if you have the money to spend.

im on a similar setup (9600gt With XP x64 Pro) and i see very little difference day to day from my 3 year old (with 8600GT and 3 gb of ram) HP/AMD board. in games its different, i can bump the graphics up a bit.

youll get more out of your ram with 64bit but not much. id suggest bumping up to 8gb of ram on a 64bit os and see how that goes.

Based on a short run of Vista Home Basic on my PC when I first got it, and Vista Home Basic on my girlfriend's laptop, I definitely get annoyed with Vista. Different context menu placement, different settings in different places. I still have a Vista disk, but it's only the 32 bit home basic version.

I am comfortable with Win XP Pro and have used it for years. I actually have an XP pro disc that I didn't previously use since I didn't want to spend the money for a 64 bit antivirus program.

I might have to try popping Windows 7 on this laptop to see if it at least runs a bit more smoothly than Vista does.

I just saw Newegg.com had the ATI 5870 for a split second... which sold out immediately.

That is the 1st Direct X11 card I've seen for sale. I'm sure there are others... I just noticed the ATI Radeon 5870 though.

I guess my main question is really this...

Is changing an operating system worth it just to get a more recent DirectX release?

In other words, is sticking with Windows XP and DirectX 9 actually prevening my gaming experience from being its best?

Not really, you just won't be getting the best graphics. But Windows XP will be preventing you from having the best computing experience. Eventually, you'll want to get DirectX 11.

Thus upgrading to Windows 7 eventually.

I wonder if the usual method of waiting 'til the first service pack applies here.

I personally say no. Mostly because there are so many people (including myself) that have been using the Release Candidate that there have plenty of bugs reported to MS to help polish the OS. Also, 7 already runs better than Vista SP1 and many drivers and hardware that work in Vista are already compatible with 7 because they share most of the same underlying code. I have not had any trouble at all with 7 RC, which is why I'm going to be buying it day 1.

I honestly thought I'd be using XP for the rest of my life, but I've heard so much positive feedback about Windows 7 I may just bite the bullet and get it.

Kind of shotty. The Geforce GTX 280 already gets 75 fps on state-of-the-art DirectX 9 games, and you only see a 30 fps improvement on Unreal Engine 3 games over a Geforce GTX 280. Sounds like it's best to wait until 2nd generation comes out to me (AMD HD 6870). >:( By 2nd generation, Doom 4 will be out or at least something worth having a card over.

The real reason they ended DirectX 10 has everything to do with the Xbox 720. Absolutely nothing to do with Win7 at all due to Vista having DirectX 11 in SP3 probably.
