The Wii- A little TOO original?

BioShocker!
Nintendo has recently become famous for not being afraid to reinvent its hardware with the DS (with its extra, touch-sensitive screen) and the Wii (obviously, with its new control system). But I ask you this: have these changes scared away casual gamers that would prefer the "old-school" controllers?

I doubt that Nintendo has forgotten about this. Aren't there Cube-style controllers that are available for the Wii? If so, it's covered. So the Wii can be enjoyed by all. Including disgruntled Sony fans. :D

There are "classic" controllers available but, from what I understand, they aren't compaitable with a large number of Wii games,

This is up to the game designers. They need to take charge and allow multiple controll schemes when possible.

No, I actually don't think so. I don't really know what the term "casual gamer" means anymore, but IMO most of the time a "casual gamer" just wants a quick game that provides entertainment. Casual gamers don't want long, time consuming games, nor do they want to spend a ton of money on something they won't put much time into anyways. Also, the commercials for Wii have done a perfect job visualizing how simple and fun the Wii's controller scheme is, so I don't think that is an issue. I'm sure even non gamers are seeing those commercials thinking "wow, that actually does look fun". I really believe Nintendo has done it right this time, and I hope others will be able to see and appreciate that.

that is because the classic controllers are for virtual console games.

^Truth... there is no reason it can't be done. But you do lose some Wii functionality if going w/ the classic controller route.

Actually, it's quite the opposite. I've had sooo many girls coming over to play Wii who never play video games. It's just capturing a broader market, not limiting one.

I think the Wii is perfect, my Mom had all of her friends over yesterday 40-50 years of age, and atleast 10 of her friends played wii sports and were amazed. They asked the usual question, where can I get one? I personally dont think is too original

I think that Nintendo is attracting more people by being original. Having the touch screen on the DS, for instance, made game play simpler and more natural.

I think the term Sam was looking for is "hardcore" gamers. I hear lots of guys who play XBox round the clock and launch repetitive attacks at the Wii for its "Stupid, simple, [edit],[edit],[edit] controls". But I think they did a good job with the originality, and I'm sure that game developers will strike a good balance of easy to pick up games that new gamers can play as well as challenging games that more hardcore gamers like.

Anyone who calls themselves a real gamer has to play the Wii or else they are not a real gamer, as far as I'm concerned. Real gamers take chances! :lol

As for casual gamers, I think the Wii is perfect. Get people intruiged by having them create their own Miis, and then teach them how to use the Wii Remote with Wii Sports. Throw in a crazy party game like Rayman Raving Rabbids, and you're set to hook the casual gamers. (I know this works, since I've already used it to ensare people XD!!). Plus, the virtual console and the lower price point makes it very appealing to the casual crowd.

I had a party last night, and the cops were called. It wasn't even because we were drunk or anything...which we were....but anyways, we were playing the Wii "too loud". You kiddin? It's freakin fun!

I'm honestly surprised this hasn't happened in Andy's neighborhood. Andy's 27, though he lives in a neighborhood that was predominantly "old people" (as it used to be a senior only community before it "opened up"). The Wii parties number in the 15-20s at times and they are insanely loud both in and out of the house (sometimes we like to go out the back door and bowl from afar, when we're just trying to irritate other players). And the Guitar Hero? My god, he can blow out eardrums with that! I'm surprsied neighbors haven't harpooned him.

Though, speaking of bowling... I'm saddened that despite the "1 controller switch" they offer, you can only have up to 4 players. Not cool. I'd totally do some 16 player bowling. Haha...

I think it is truly innovative and Nintendo took a gamble with making such an original system. Obviously their gamble paid off. Tousche Nintendo.
P.S. I have no clue how to spell too-shay.

Little revival, just pointing out that the Wiimote is just an invisible stylus pretty much.
