Top 5 games (Then and Now)

I recently found a thread from 2007 where people listed their top 5 games, and I thought it would be fun to post your top 5 as of right now, and then look back and see how many games still match up. If you didn't participate in that thread, try and think of what you might have said back then, or what you were most into at the time.

Now:

1.Zelda OOT
2. Secret of Mana 3 (SNES)
3. Mario Kart 64
4. Shadow of the Colossus
5. Civilization Revolution

Then:

1. Zelda: OOT
2. Mario Kart 64
3. Super Mario Bros. 3
4. Conker's Bad Fur Day
5. Advance Wars

I totally forgot about CBFD - I am really fond of that game - and Advance Wars is one of my favorite franchises ever. SMB3 probably should have been on my top 5 now, but I forgot about it. I'm actually surprised I didn't list SOM3 before, because that game is often one that I sometimes think I like more than OOT. SO many choices though...

(old thread: http://www.egameaddiction.com/forums/index.php?topic=6959)

Back in 2007 I didn't even own a game console, so, sorry, but I couldn't have a list. :H

Now?

1. Uncharted 3
2. Star Fox Adventures
3. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
4. Metroid Prime
5. Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine (N64)

Not going to change any time soon… at all. Those 5 games are about as close to perfection as video games can get.

Although, I had played a few games on the N64 back in 2002, so in 2007…it might've included these…

Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine (N64)
Hydro Thunder
Mario Kart 64

Then:
1. Final Fantasy VIII
2. Super Mario Bros. 3
3. Kid Icarus
4. Command and Conquer Series
5. Quake 3

Now:
1. Metal Gear Solid
2. Tales of the Abyss
3. Tales of Symphonia
4. Chrono Trigger
5. Street Fighter X Tekken

This required some thinking, since I never posted in that topic, but considering I didn't have a PC then, my top 5 probably would have been...

Dark Cloud Series [PS2]
Kingdom Hearts Series [PS2, GBA]
Metal Gear Solid Series [PS1, PS2]
Burnout 3 [PS2]
Super Smash Bros Series [N64, GC, Wii]

Had to use series, or it would have been DC and KH only lol

But now, only one of those is in my top five.

Left 4 Dead Series [PC]
Counter-Strike: Source [PC]
Dark Cloud Series [PS2]
Just Cause 2 [PC, PS3]
Amnesia [PC]

That list was tough though. Top 10 would be easier, there are so many great games... I would add KotOR [PC], Bad Company 2 [PC, PS3], Killing Floor [PC], Goldeneye [N64], and Madden to that list. I could play pretty much any of those all day without getting tired of them.

I originally posted

Man, I can't do this.....I will just say....

Mario games

Mario Kart games

Zelda games

Metroid games

and now I would say

Mario games

Mario kart games

Zelda games

Kirby games

I never thought I'd see SFA on anyone's top 5 game list. Ever. I still don't really believe you. :lol

Dark Cloud... I forgot about that game. There's one that's long overdue for a sequel.

It has a sequel. You didn't know? Although it's not really a sequel to the first game... It's kinda like Final Fantasy, in the sense that it plays like the other, but doesn't continue the first game's story.

Well I didn't post in that thread 5 years ago but I am sure my list back then looked like this

1. Tales of symphonia
2. Majora's mask
3. Wind Waker
4. Final Fantasy IX
5. Legend of Dragoon

But now my list would consists of 4 games from the tales series... (Symphonia, Abyss, Vesperia and Innocence, possibly Graces F but I haven't finished that one) so my top 5 would be my 5 favorite games BESIDES the tales series

1. The world ends with you
2. Shin Megami Tensei Devil survivor 2
3. Majora's Mask
4. BlazBlue Continuum Shift
5. Chrono Cross

Honorable mentions would be Ninja Gaiden sigma, Metroid prime, Super smash bros brawl, Super Street Fighter 4, persona 3 and 4 and the Ys series

Yeah, in hindsight I really think Majora's Mask was the better of the 64 Zeldas. OOT was just the first Zelda I played, so nothing can really compare to that experience.

Looking back on it now, Majora's Mask was just such an original and well executed vision for a game. Haunting at times. The mysteriousness of the parallel universe, the sense of futility in helping others for one 3-day cycle, the brief moments of solace, and just the pervasive and deep yet subtle and outspoken sadness of the whole world until you finally set things right is a feat unto itself.

I think the 2012 me would go ballistic for something like that now. Very Journey, actually (which is amazing).

I was actually wondering if I liked Majora's Mask simply because it was the first 3D zelda game I played. But in hindsight I realize that I've been looking far and wide for a game that emulates an experience similar to it, I have yet to find an answer.

No doubt.

Oh also, the tragic sense of loss is virtually unmatched in any game before or since. Maybe in SotC compares, and a handful of others, but very, very few.

Because I'm completely unbiased! Any and all hate for that game is (almost always, like, 95% of the time) because of one of two reasons: (Sometimes both)

1) its not starfox!!1
2) its just a zelda clone, but not as good!!

If you play it for what it is, it's an absolutely amazing adventure. I've replayed it several times. It never gets old and the atmosphere it creates is always the same wonderful atmosphere. I can elaborate on why my top 5 is my top 5, if you guys want… since a few of them are debatable to a lot of people.

Not a perfect game, but as I said in my post, all 5 are as close to perfection as you can get. I only rank my top 5 based on which ones I personally like to play more. They're all equal in terms of their brilliance and perfection.

1. Final Fantasy X
2. Dragon Age Series
3. World of Warcraft
4. Final Fantasy IX
5. Tales of series

Don't know how I never replied to that topic (at least that I can see) but I imagine that it wouldn't be much different.

1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
2. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
3. Half-Life 2
4. Metroid Prime
5. Rome: Total War (tough choice between Rome and StarCraft)

1. OoT
2. Kotor (I'm bumping BG II off the list, and replacing it with kotor...don't ask, lol)
3. Bioshock (haven't finished it, but this still definitely deserves a sopt)
4. Metroid Prime
5. Banjo Tooie (nostalgia counts for a lot...)

There have been some changes. Mostly me realizing I've never enjoyed Zelda games that much. :lol

So let's try this again, and do it right this time. :D

1. Half-Life 2
2. Mass Effect (entire series, particularly 1)
3. Team Fortress 2
4. Kotor
5. Civilization IV + expansions

I didn't like it because it was a classic Rareware collect-a-thon. Ambitious, but uninspired, and ultimately just kind of a bland let down.

I was pumped for that game when it was called Dinosaur Planet. But, just like Turok, they managed to make dinosaurs uncool.

Then...
1. Halo series (1, 2, and 3)
2. Half-Life series
3. Starcraft
4. Command and Conquer Series
5. Call of Duty 2

Now...

1. Halo series (honestly, playing online with my buds never gets old)
2. Starcraft 1 and 2 (see above)
3. Left 4 Dead series (same reason)
4. Half Life series (epic single player)
5. Total War series (favorite single player series)

The biggest change here is that my time has changed enough that I focus more on multiplayer games with my friends over single player games... I just don't have as much time to invest in them as I used to.

I didn't post then but I probably would have said:

1. Sonic 2
2. G-d of War
3. RE: Code Veronica
4. Metal Gear Solid
5. Final Fantasy VIII

Now I'd probably say:

1. Sonic 2
2. Uncharted 3
3. G-d of War III
4. RE: Revelations
5. Power Stone
