Apparently Gamestop and EBgames have stopped taking pre-orders for the Gamecube version of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Not only that, but they've refunded already placed pre-orders and have quit listing the game as a release at all. In Japan the game can be ordered on the Web directly from Nintendo, but neither Nintendo nor Gamestop/EBgames have commented on whether or not they will still be selling the GC version in North America.

I don't want to jump the gun and say that I called it, but it does seem as though Nintendo is going to force people to buy the Wii if they want to play the new Zelda, although new may be too kind a word, because this game has been in development and promised to Cube owners over three years ago. I will be very interested in seeing how this turns out.
 
Nintendo and their fans....much like a bunch of wet dogs running back to their master time after time again. :lol

It didn't take a rocket scientist to see this coming. :lol
 
We did stop taking reservations on the GC Zelda. But it's still being released as far as I know. Some stores in my district have like 300 reservations. I know my store has 134 for the GC Zelda. I really don't see Nintendo disappointing that many people. That would be very bad customer service.

That would be dirty. They better release it on the cube. I wanna get it on Wii, but others have been waiting forever. That would just be wrong.
 
False alarm.

[UPDATE] Since this story went live, Nintendo confirmed that the GameCube version of the game is still going to be released in stores as expected. "Online reports about the Nintendo GameCube version of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess are incorrect. The amazing game will be available at retail outlets nationwide on December 13," a rep said in a statement.

We received an email about it. To clarify, the reason why we stopped taking reservations is because that we already have so many, we're afraid our allocation won't cover them.

But rest assured, the game is still coming out as planned.

this would have been my 1st guess. It is was not uncommon for EB to over book games. My thoughts turn to the Ocarina of Time release...
 
Yeah, and we started reserves on Twilight Princess before it was even given the title Twilight Princess. I mean we pretty much started right after E3 2004. That's two years worth of reserves to fill. So I'm not surprised that they shut off the reservations.
 
What was peculiar was the amount of time it took for anyone to comment on it. I mean, if it was simply overbooking pre-orders, why wouldn't they come right out and say that? Why wouldn't they tell the people they were refunding why they were refunding them? Why did they have to wait half a week before going public with the news? As I said, it was very suspicious.

maybe they had manufacturing problems... and can't guarantee when the next batch came out?
Maybe they had translation problems...
Maybe something unexpected happeend...

Who knows.... maybe they just want to get the game totally right before they release it.

Maybe the companies that pre-ordered too many had to give back the pre-orders to customers because they ordered more than Nintnedo's commitment to them... and Nintendo forced them to give the money back.


Who knows.... It is awkward that they would give the money back on pre-orders... I never really heard of that.... but there are so many pre-ordered / pre-bought... a few pre-orders given back aren't much to blink at. I mean.. you are looking at a 2 million + game seller right now. Do you think Nintendo would pull anything with those numbers? ;)

But that's what I mean, why wouldn't they just say that in the first place? Why would they give ammunition to speculators like me when the problem was as simple as it was? I just found the timing to be a tad askew.

To make people want the Wii version. Since it is good enough to be a system seller.
 
I'm not sure about the whole refund thing. At least at my store, no one who had reserved Zelda for the Cube was forced to take a refund. And at the store where I have it reserved myself (which is a different store from the one I work at), even though I know there's at least 300 reservations, I haven't received a call about having to get a refund.

So I'm really curious as to the circumstances under which people got refunds. It might have been that some stores jumped the gun and thought it was canceled altogether for Gamecube, so they did the refunds on that basis. They probably felt really stupid once they got the email that said it was still coming out for GC, though. :lol

I am wondering about that... maybe a manager (or a few) was hit with a stupid stick or something..

@ stealth.. maybe they didn't say at 1st because they didn't know what the deal was, or they didn't know that Gamestop was refunding. Maybe Gamestop shouldn't have refunded... or something like that. Maybe Nintendo was out of the loop for Gamestop's operations... or something like that.

But the article said that Gamestop did not respond either. They contacted reps from EBgames, gamestop, and Nintendo. No one said anything. :lol
