I'm starting school in the fall to become a video game designer. If anyone has any useful information (books, websites, etc.) any help would be greatly appreciated.
Yeah, I have a few you can check out. Look into as much programming as you can. Sure, you're not going to be doing hardcore coding yourself as the designer, but being able to understand how to do different things with code and what challenges and difficulties the programmers face on a daily basis will give you a much better ability to be able to communicate with them effectively and really get your point across. Same with art. Music not as much, as you don't need to be an expert in that, but make sure you have some idea what you're getting those guys into as well.
Game Design Fundamental books are great to give you ideas and teach you how to make games fair and fun to play. (http://tinyurl.com/6jxs9k) I own the one on the top there, the one with the blue and yellow cover.
I'm actually a junior computer science major, so I'd probably be more in the programming than in the developing, but I'd love to work in the gaming industry. Main reason why I picked my major outside of my lifetime of computer experience. I may end up working for Microsoft after I graduate though, as I've been working with them for the past year now already. Maybe I can slip into the Xbox department....
But yeah, I've made a few games, taken three years of computer science in high school and now in my third year in college, and just seeing where this current job with Microsoft takes me.
