Video Game Testing Question

Hey All,

I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on how to properly go about getting involved in video game testing. I'm looking for some extra hours during the week and thought this might be an amazing way of making some extra dough. I've seen some stuff on the web where you have to pay a fee to become a member and have access to a list of game testing jobs, but i'm a bit wary of this and am afraid i'll just be throwing my money away. Any thoughts, suggestions or information would be most welcome. Thanks!

If memory serves Boss,1 of our members used to have that job.I just can't remember who.Whoever it was, forgive me for not knowing that who was you.

God Bless.

First off welcome to the forums.

Second, do not, I repeat DO NOT PAY for these listings. Many publishers and developers who need testers put their open positions on the web for free and are not hard to find. They usually all have a job opportunity link on their web page which is where you can find them easily.

Third, where are you from? Most of the major publishers and developers are in major metropolitan cities. But if you know that there is a developer or publisher in your area I would start with their website.

Fourth, where are you at in life? I ask this because most testing positions are not permanent and also require a lot of hours depending on the game. A major triple-A title might ask for 70-80 hours of week from you for approximately 1 whole month with only a few days off in between. It can get grueling and tedious if you have a family or other things to worry about like school.

When I get more time I'll post some more but I hope you get an idea of the general testing position.

Wow, thanks for the info man. Yeah, i had a bad feeling about paying any kind of fee for that sort of thing. I live about 25 minutes outside of Washington, DC. Bethesda Studios is in Rockville, not far from me. I checked their website and they currently have no game testing positions. I called them up too and they just told me the same thing, to look at the job postings.

I didn't realize that they require that many hours to commit to. I'm working right now as a part time music teacher. I have a lot of free time at the moment..but when summer hits, that'll change... then come september, it'll go back down. I might be able to swing that many hours at certain times of the year. I also got another website from a friend living out in LA. he told me about www.gamasutra.com so i'll be checking that out too.

Keep the advice coming!! Thank you so much for your help!!

You're very welcome!

And yes Gamasutra is a great place to get info as well. They are very up to date with their information.

Another thing is that most developers and publishers are busiest during the spring and summer so that they can release their games in time for the Holiday season. So it would be more difficult to find a testing position job during other seasons. It depends on what the publisher or developer is working on at the moment. So it's a bit hit or miss during those off seasons.
