For those of you who don't know, the movie adaptation of the graphic novel Watchmen has been at the forefront of a lawsuit between Fox and Warner Bros. over rights to distribute the film. It was expected to be pushed back several months because of this case, but Warner Bros. and Fox have settled out of court. This means that Watchmen will be keeping its March 6 release date. :D

In light of this good news, I thought I'd make an official Watchmen thread for discussion about the adaptation of the greatest graphic novel of all time. Post all of your thoughts, hopes, fears, and doubts about the adaptation here.

Personally, I'm slowly starting to come around on this movie. I was dead set against it when I found out Tales of the Black Freighter was being pulled and the ending changed, but I just keep hearing more goods things about it. Outside of those two things, it looks like it might be a faithful adaptation of the graphic novel and might even be able to live up to its source material.
 
I have been trying to decide whether or not I should read the comic before I see the movie. Seeing the movie trailers has really got me interested in the story, and experience has taught me that the book is, indeed, always better than the movie. So I don't want to go into the book already knowing what happens because I saw the movie first.

At the same time, I just don't know if I can bring myself to read a comic book.

To quote Bill Watterson: "You can make your superhero a psychopath, you can draw gut-splattering violence, and you can call it a "graphic novel," but comic books are still incredibly stupid."

I know the Watchmen might be the exception to this rule, but at the same time, I don't know if that's a chance I'm willing to take. At least with a movie I expect a good deal of stupidity, so I'll be more inclined to forgive some shortcomings. But the written word is still something I hold in high esteem, and I don't want to go into the movie having been disappointed by the book.

Its quite the conundrum, I don't know what I'm going to do.

I felt similar about comics before reading Watchmen. The ones I had read were overly-simplistic, plastic, and fake, but Watchmen is none of those. I don't want to spoil anything, but it's an amazing provocative story because of the fact that it not only largely avoids the conventions of the superhero genre, but almost deconstructs them. It shows what happens when heroes live long enough to see themselves become villains. Try to push away the prejudice towards comics and read it.

(**NOTE: Comics do not include Manga because a) I haven't read much Manga so I can't comment on it and b) Zi would try to kill me if I was talking about Manga here :lol)

even though i only read a chapter (like i have said in other threads i hate reading manga/comics on-line) i agree with what you say
 
I saw the trailer and man, I want to see it now. I like the premise of the movie and the characters are rather unique. The director of 300 is doing this film and I have high hopes for it so far.

I don't really remember this comic series, maybe because it lasted only 12 issues from 86 to 87?

Regardless, it grabbed my attention.

Oh and btw MGS fans, Mr. David Hayter has helped with the screenplay for this film, so I suggest you watch it.

From what little I know about the story, parts of it are supposed to be cheezy. Its set in a universe that supposes "what would the world be like if people really did dress up in costumes to fight crime?" but not for the explicit purpose of comedy.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about this.

The reviews are in, and they are very good. This is honestly what I expected. Pacing was going to be the main problem with the movie, but the critics have thus far loved the movie otherwise. Apparently, Snyder did a damn good adaptation. I can't wait until it comes out now!
