What Do You Look For In A Good "Fighter"?

What I like in a good "Fighter" is moves that aren't so tricky to pull off.Gore.I sure wish the "Tekken" series had "Finishing" Moves like "MK" did.

What a great question.

To start off, despite the fact that Blazblue is an awesome fighter, the roster of only 12 characters was quite disappointing. Therefore, I think for any new fighter, the minimum amount of playable characters should be at least 16-20.

Secondly, moves shouldn't be exceedingly hard to pull off, Street Fighter 4 is like this with combos, and it shouldn't be. They intentionally make it difficult to pull off combo's, so you get better timing, but I think that's wrong, combo's should never be too hard to pull off. I like how Tatsunoko Versus Capcom handles combo's better.

A good fighting game needs balance, otherwise everyone will tend to only pick the top tier characters. MVC2 is a perfect example of a game that could be so much better with balance tweaks. Somewhat nerf the top tiers, and upgrade the lower fighters for a much better varied game.

Flashyness, and cool moves are important, these are fighting games after all, where a lot of the appeal is unleashing super flashy moves, and performing long combos. Without that extra sense of flash, and unrealness, fighting games would only be half as fun as they are now.

Lastly, a good music track really helps the fighting game experience. Everyone knows what it feels like to get a wave of energy when they are listening to their favorite tune in the game, and unleash a mouth watering victory. It's so satisfying.

That's all I can think of at the moment, I will post more later.

I agree with this post for the most part. however i have to disagree with the roster of Blazblue being disappointing I personally loved the roster of blazblue because they had 12 well developed characters instead of 60 characters and many of them did not stand out. but i totally understand how 12 characters can be a dissapointment (after all i hated naruto ninja storm due to a low roster too)

another point regarding street fighter though... I enjoy street fighter and games with complicated combos but to an extent.... sure playing online against people who have a similar skill level is fun but when I try to play with friends that are not really into street fighter enough to learn all the combos/strategies things just get iffy...

I think the street fighter series is an excellent fighting series and although i have never even came close to becoming a pro at it i will have to say that sadly it is not the fighter for me... I rarely play online games and when i do play online games i play them with friends. most of the time when i buy a fighting game i make sure a couple of my friends get into it so that I can at least play with someone i know and have something to do while we hang out, this is the case for games like brawl, blazblue, tatsunoko vs capcom and easy-to-learn-hard-to-master fighters (or the oddballs as i like to call them) however when my friends tried to get into street fighter 4 they couldn't get into the fighting system... it is a disappointment since I always wanted to become a decent player at any street fighter game however beating arcade multiple times won't let me accomplish that, in addition i just don't enjoy playing fighting games against strangers online....

it is a little weird for me to be saying stuff like this since i usually play games that are so obscure/hidden that many haven't heard of them, and even then i enjoy them greatly... so to say that i don't enjoy the SF series simply because the friends i have don't enjoy it either is rather weird.... and it kind of goes against what i believe (never submit to peer pressure).

Don't get me wrong, I think Street Fighter is an excellent game series, just wish the combo's weren't so stubborn. lol

And while it is true that all of the characters stand out in Blazblue, the chances of you finding 5-6 characters you like to play as in BlazBlue is unlikely, and that's a problem for me. I'm not the type of guy who only likes to play as one character over and over again, I like variety.
