What should be in a video game store?

I have decided to open up a video game store. hopefully better than the big chain of video game stores. I need input for what should be in a video game store. Any help, tips, and suggestions would be most appreciative. Please post. thanks.

what should be in a game store??
lots of controllers and games and consoles

and if you can set up a little place to play test games
thats a crowd drawer if you wanna get a good sell

knowledgeable staff that can help people make informed decisions about what games they want to play. and lots of sample booths or something like that so you can try out a game before you buy it. and chairs while you test. i can't stand and play games at the same time unless its certain games on the wii.

Chairs, I dont think the idea of the store is to get people to go into every piece of gaming merchandise to try out while they are browsing for their product.

Trading cards games are also needed in abundance!!! Yu-Gi-Oh especially.

My ideals seem to be facing more and more opposition as the days where on, oh well.

Trading cards are needed, Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh are no where to be found anymore (well only at WalMart and Target). I would also think the store would need to have a robust system of being able to offer posters to consumers.

A place to game is nice. Competitive gaming tournaments weekly are nice. Knowledgeable people are major major plus. They don't kick you out after spending 20 minutes just bsing around. They should have games and stoof too.

EDIT:: It's also nice to be a mom and pop run store. Like today. I spent over a hour at the store help setting up some game tournaments and helping select some up coming titles that need to be on the list for new orders and then playing some GoW, GH3, and Halo 3 with the store owner.

In the age of the internet, I find the value in knowledge sales a associates as a waste, oftentimes the same information that they know is the same that you already know.

you have a flaw because alot of times its the parents that buy the kids videogames so a knowlegable staff is definately needed

ive seen this everytime i go to a game store

I have ever at times, only seen the kids run automatically to what they wanted. The only other time I saw a knowledgable staff member was when these two older guys late 20s maybe were discussing the age of good RPGs on the PS2, I can only see knowledgeable staff needed for the perhaps times when people walk down memory lane like that or maybe at the holiday season time. No one buys nothing if it wasnt feature on a commercial or poster anyway. If it isnt advertised than 10 times out 10 then the parent wont buy it.

a knowledgeable staff shows that they are most qualified for the job. I don't see knowledgeable staff at stores like Gamestop hence why I count them as a last ditch effort to get my games and why I hate most of the staff members in Gamestops. And why wouldn't it be good to have some one that knows as much info as you do when you go to purchase a game? You could end up with a good relationship with the owners/employees that work there. Saying that knowledgeable staff is useless is complete ludicrous.

I do not see how having a knowledgeable staff aids in the purchase process. You already know what you are going to the store to buy. It is not like you are going to buy an expensive digital camera, a pricy whirlpool refrigerator, or a dense toaster oven, but rather a simple game. Most of the process is already done for you in the layout of the store, advertising, and posters. A knowledgeable staff is worthless in these situations for no one goes to them for guidance. As I have proclaimed, we live in the online age and now a days if people want to find something they conduct extensive frivolous internet searches online and thus in the end come out more knowledgeable than the sales associates. People buy games from Amazon all the time, I have yet to see a knowledgeable sales associate shoot me an email, or chat session, or other for of instant communication online when Im browsing for games, thus they arent needed.

Let's make this basic.

Knowledgeable staff = helpful/neutral at any time.

Not knowledgeable staff = rarely that helpful.

I really don't see why you wouldn't want one.

For people like us then yes, you are correct. But, not everyone searches before doing a purchase. If you take some of the questions that our own Mega has had from customers you would see why having a informed person work for a store that SPECIFIES in gaming would be a great thing. Do you understand that people can do searches on the items that you have mentioned and make a purchase based off of that, does that make all other informed sales person obsolete? From your statements, they sure as hell seem to be. What if you take a person that wants to get into gaming and they ask a sales person about games to help get into gaming that has no idea of what they are talking about, does that help the person that asked for the help really seem to benefit? No. Now take it on the other side of the coin with an informed sales person, they are really helpful to that person and you gain another gamer. Now after looking at that type of situation are knowledgeable staff not needed?

A person who would have wanted to get into gaming would have already conducted several steps of basic searching without the aid of the sales associate. I am quite sure they have been swayed by TV advertisements, several other outlets of media suc as TV shows, newspapers, online reviews and ratings, and other peoples opinion. They could only ask the associate the most basic information regardless (such as if you are shopping for a special cable for the tv you would ask for help, not asking the person about the advantages and disadvantages of the cable in question and whether or not that is a right choice and such). People are not as helpless as people seem to be making them. I am quite sure that any buyer would definitely have knowledge to make any purchase without the sales associate whether or the buyer has experience in what they are buying or not. What is so difficult for them to pick up the box and read its description and follows labels, what is so difficult about paying attention to posters and "how to buy it" guides? Nothing, thus these informed sales associates are more of a useless luxury rather than a necessity.

I am just going to make a list of what I would think be great, I haven't read all the posts so odds are I am posting something someone already said.

-Good staff who knows their games
-Classic games/systems as well as all new stuff
-Games for all ages
-A back room for computer gaming which you charge by the hour (games like WoW, counterstrike etc...this store near my house has that and they make a killing off that)

Thats about it for now I'll add more when I think of them.

And people buying for others haven't.
I am quite sure they have been swayed by TV advertisements,
That's dumb, name one commercial that aims to makes a game look bad.

Um, most people actually don't.

If it was an informed staff, they could.

Your statement contradicts itself, so you've already said what I was planning on pointing out.
What is so difficult for them to pick up the box and read its description and follows labels, what is so difficult about paying attention to posters and "how to buy it" guides? Nothing, thus these informed sales associates are more of a useless luxury rather than a necessity.
The eff's a poster gonna teach you? How about words? Does it say on the box, "People have said this game contains average gameplay." No. It attempts to draw you in even if it sucks.

The moral of the story is, what would an informed staff be hurting? Absolutely nothing. How about an uninformed staff? A lot.
