What's the purpose of different models of gaming systems?

The 360 and the PS3 are not just gaming consoles anymore, they have become somewhat of a brand, if you refer to a PS3, its not always the smae. You've got 20gb-80gb consoles, but whats the purpose? Think back to the GBA, you've got the GBA and the GBASP. The SP was made to have a smaller size, is there a size difference between a 20gb PS3 and the 80gb model? Same with the DS and the PS1&2 and PSP, all altered for size. I may be a blundering idiot who has no idea what im talking about, but i just dont see the purpose, there should be a universal 360, and a universal PS3. Allways the same like the retro stuff.

To put it bluntly:

We have the technology....we can make them...better...faster....stronger...

The Retro Stuff was remodeled all the time btw. The SNES, for example was revised many times (internally) before the SNES 2 arrived (the smaller one). If I ever work on a SNES, I'll show you what I mean on the next chapter of "Mega's Workshop".

The Atari 2600 was remodeled over 4 times. The Sega Master System was remodel 4 times. The Original GameBoy was changed 3 times.

SP was smaller in size, but the screen and back light. Plus being the first GameBoy not need batteries. It was a drastic change to the standard GameBoy.

Now technology terms, to make a product run better and more efficient is the biggest concern of any company. Making your consumers happier with their product is always a major plus.

Reason being in business terms is companies will find any means necessary to make their products cheaper. So finding cheaper parts to cutdown production cost of what it takes to make this product, also up rises production of that product by 10 fold, which leads to profit for the big bosses.

Or we could give the consumer options, wherein they don't have to pay for features they don't want.

This... and what makes the PS3 a PS3 is the fact that it can play PS3 and blu-ray movies. That is the core functionality of all the units, all the other features are just extras. Same with 360.
