Resident Evil: Degeneration was an example of how a game based on a movie should stick closely to the game's storyline in order to make it successful. Yet new-comers find it a drag, since they never play the games and expect a new experience. Yet become disappointed when their expectations are too high for the film.

I disagree. :lol

Seriously though, here's a couple reasons why.

Advent Children proved fans of the game would enjoy a movie about the game so long as the movie was actually about the game. What filmmakers need to focus on now is making a movie about the narrative of a game. Part of the problem with video game to film crossovers is that the narrative itself performs a different function in each medium, but ultimately they are generally crafted around constructing a motive and reason for a main character to do something of the extraordinary variety. Problems arise when the narrative of a video game veers towards something that is much more fun to do than it is to watch be done. Filmmakers just need to find the common threads between the game's narrative and an interesting movie narrative, set it in the story-world of the game, and avoid any unnecessary changes or deviations from the game itself.

They also need to pick games which are profoundly heavy on narrative. There really isn't much to work with when it comes to the Resident Evil series, so its not a shock that a Resident Evil film would either 1) deviate heavily from the game's characters, plot, setting, etc., to create a cohesive and interesting movie narrative, or 2) would stick to the game at all costs, ignoring the fact that the two mediums are experienced in completely different ways.

I like CGI movies based off games. That's pretty much the only way I'm satisfied.

agreed.... usually CGI can portray the feeling of a game more than live action
