Why you should rethink buying the 3DS day 1.

I was pretty excited about this little gadget in the early days of its announcement. I've loved handheld gaming for as long as I can remember and have owned all but 1 of Nintnedo's portables (the Gameboy Pocket, which was a variant that almost doesn't even count). I've played a lot of great 1st and 3rd party games on the go. In some cases, I've even played and/or preferred a franchise's handheld counterpart more than its home console version. I'm almost kind of a fanboy for handheld games.

Ever since Wii came out, however, I've felt like Nintendo isn't looking at its fans as closely anymore. They're a business, to be sure, and to stay in business, you have to make money. What better way to make money than targeting the oblivious casual market? Apparently, none.

That all said, which the exception of 2 or 3 games, this is one of the most disappointing launch lineups I have ever seen. This ranks up there with the Xbox and PS3 launches for me, with similar levels of crushing disappointment. Very little in terms of not only original content, but exciting content. Professor Layton and Street Fighter IV look to be as good as this launch gets. Unless you're really excited for nintendogs + cats French Bulldog or Riiiiiiiiiiiidge Raaaacer 3d or another Samurai Warriors. If you are excited for these games, you've probably been lobotomized a long time ago, and you're probably wondering where all the cute puppy pictures are and none of this has any bearing on you mentally.

I'm kidding, of course, but where are Nintendo's champions here? Where's Mario and Zelda or Metroid- nintendogs just doesn't even matter. It's casual-gamer-fodder. The philosophy of early adopters totally getting screwed is pretty prevalent here. The only reason I will regret not buying this overpriced piece of gimmickry is that I didn't have one to put up on ebay for 50 or 100 bucks above retail.

The launch games are pretty underwhelming. I'm counting on that making it easier to get the 3DS at launch. If everyone else has the same idea to wait until the Zeldas and the Marios and other good games come out, then it may be harder to find at that time. I'm getting the 3DS at launch so I don't have to worry about not being able to find it when the good games start coming out. Plus, I never upgraded from the DS Lite.

Yeah it'll be good to have DS games handy if you are planning on getting one. at least you'll have some good stuff to play while you wait however long it will take for something respectable to come out.

Agreed. Besides most of the time when i buy a new handheld i don't buy games right away for several reasons, it just happens (did not have money, did not want any games etc...) usually i just play with games of older gen until i get a new game.

Why not just save up money and wait? That way, when the good stuff hits, you can get it all in one swoop.

I'm only waiting for Resident Evil, so I'll be waiting as well. The main reason is mostly the fact that I have bunch of games I still need to finish. If I pick one up right away, I'm to get a game for it and I don't want it just sitting there not being played.

it doesn't make a bit of difference though... the game and the system will cost the same no matter when i buy it. I rather buy the system when i have the extra money.

and that was only way back then when i didn't have a job so my parents only bought SP/DS without any games.

I'm not saying the price will be any different, just saying buying a system without a game because you don't have enough money is never a good idea. I did that when I was 12 with my Gameboy Color. Had to wait 2 weeks until Christmas to get Pokemon Red and Blue. Longest 2 weeks of my childhood.

The 3DS plays regular DS games, though. Granted, non-3DS games don't take specific advantage of the hardware, but it's not like the system will sit there collecting dust until 3DS games come out.

i agree with you that fans are straying away because Nintendo is not looking as closely to its fans as before. they need to go back to that. thats what made them so successful.
