Right now my computer can't connect to the internet even though it has a direct connection to my router. Oddly enough, connecting though wifi on my 360, PS3, and ipod touch is working fine. Even the light by the ethernet port on my computer is on, signaling the there is a connection. Any ideas?

open command prompt

type ipconfig/release

as soon as you do type ipconfig/renew

that should renew your IP lease. if not, check in windows to see if your ethernet card (commonly called NIC) is disabled.

I tried the ipconfig/release and it said "The requested operation requires elevation."
As for the NIC, I couldn't find it in the device manager, so that was a dead end for me too.

go to start-> all programs -> accessories. RIGHT CLICK command prompt and click "run as administrator" UAC should pop up and either prompt for password or you should just be able to click continue.

then try ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew.

"Requires elevation" means you arent administrator on your computer (which is default for Vista/7)

This time it says "The operation failed as no adapter is in the state of permissible for this operation."

The last thing I did was install an update to AVG Anti-virus. I had to restart and when it booted up it was like this.

hmm

what type of computer is it?

is the ethernet port built into the motherboard or is it a PCI interface card?

(let me know if im losing you)

Its a Dell Inspriron 545s, I think its built into the motherboad, but I can't be 100% sure.

ah a notebook. most likely built into the MOBO. or at least as far as im willing to go with one. :lol

dell has their drivers online, can you get online through that computer (wifi?) to access their driver database (dell.com and search for drivers)

download the latest driver and see if that fixes it.

and check to see if there are any new driver updates for you computer. never hurts to check.

Its actually a desktop, and I had already tried to update the drivers.

hmmm. i hate to say this but without physically being there, i dont know what to do.
That's alright. Thanks a lot for trying to help. I'll look into it more tomorrow.

I would check the AVG Firewall settings. When I installed AVG on my desktop it asked me a bunch of stuff and I had to create a "Profile" for my firewall that changes depending on whether I'm online or not. My desktop is also connected through ethernet, for what it's worth.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I fixed it a while ago.

If anyone else has simliar problems, check the device manager, especially if the problem appears soon after a hardware change or driver update.
