Xbox problems, issues, malfunctions...who has had them?

Ok..so I just want to get a feel for how many people here have ever had or seen someone else have any type of problems on an Xbox console.

I have become very curious of this...at work last night I asked everyone I came in contact with, and wrote down the results for my own amusement...here is what I have to share in my own little personal survey of 20 people at random.

have you had games freeze or crash? 15 people said Yes.
Have you experienced disc read errors on new/like new games? 15 people said Yes.
Have you experienced DVD's stuttering or freezing? 20 people said Yes.
Have you experinced "green screen of death" with red power light? 5 people said yes.
Have you experienced hard drive failure? 3 people said yes.
Have you experienced any issues with the power cord? 0 people said yes.
Have you experienced problems with custom soundtracks causing game errors? 11 people said Yes.
Have you had an Xbox to die completely? 2 people said Yes.

So please take the time to answer this stuff guys..I'm very curious because these boards are the only place I ever see people really defending these issues.

Ackula, just FYI, I'm taking statistics right now, and unless you supply both the people who said yes and the total number of people asked, plus a comparison of simiilar questions asked of PS2 and Gamecube owners, you cannot really supply any statistically significant results.

If you're serious about this, please collect more data and I'll actually help you out with the stats if you wish.

And no, I have not had any of the above issues with my roomie's modded xbox.

My friend has one with one of those crappy disc drives or whatever. Every once in awhile we had problems playing it over XBC. Never had a problem with it offline. Never had any problems watching movies, playing music, etc.

I'm guessing a lot of these people don't take very good care of their games/systems, or they don't know how. What was the average age of these people, or were they all over the board?

Ok

Well to adress the issue of not taking care of systems..I can speak only for myself...I baby the heck outta mine and I have had almost all those problems..except power cord problems. I never leave my systems plugged in, keep them in the box when not in play, and never place them in a cramped space or on carpet when playing them.

I asked 20 people. Their ages were between 23 and 42.

Mine was well taken care of. Whenever I didnt play it I put it back in its plastic cover that it came with so it wouldn't get any dust. It was never dropped or recieve any type of physical harm. My brother-in-laws x-box also had problems playing certain discs. His beach soccer game wouldn't play on his system but played perfectly fine on mine.

Wow, some of you guys take insanely good care of your systems. I'd be way too lazy to do that. Sometimes I'm too lazy to change the game that's in it, so I'll just play whatever's in there, even if I don't really want to, lol.

My xbox hasint been working exceptionally lately.... The disk tray refuses to eject so I must use the Manuel eject. I can deal with that I guess but what I cant deal with is this. My Xbox does not read my games when I put them in. When I turn my xbox on it will sound and look like its on (humming and green light) but it wont show up on the television screen all the time. I have to continuously press the power button over and over until it finally starts up. Some times it starts up on the second try but us ally I have to press that little power button a good 50 times before it starts up. PLEASE ANY ADVICE WOULD HELP....JUST TELL ME WHATS GOING ON AND HOW TO FIX IT!!! :? >:( :? >:(

You dont have to post the same post 3 times, it will get answered if someone knows the answer. :) Welcome to the Boards!

Yeah thanks, im just scared im going to have to drop 150 on a new box when I would rather spend that money on other stuff..

Oh no problem, I wouldnt want to put that much money in to it either. Hope someone can help you! :)

I posted this in the thread started by lanceevox, but someone deleted it so I'll post it again.

My friend had the same problem with his Xbox. He had to start using a butterknife to open and close the tray and shortly after that when he put games in his Xbox it would hum and the light would come on but nothing would come up on the screen. We took it apart (which is extremely hard to do, and voids your warranty, btw) and found that a part of the Xbox had melted. They left their Xbox on the floor and after a couple years dust clogged the fan and this perticular part melted from overheating. Unfortuneatly, the only way to repair it is to get a new part to replace that, which my friend couldn't do because his warranty was void. They ended up having to buy a new one. I don't know if this is the same thing that's happening with you, but I'd be willing to bet its something very similar. If you have a warranty on it then try to get a replacement, or at the very least send it in to be fixed (though replacing it would be much better, a lot of times "fixing" up any electronic devices means its just gonna crap out again 6 months later). If you don't have a warranty, maybe open it up and try to see if it is something you can fix.

man... i have had serious probs with my xbox... i bought a few new games and plays like crap on it.. take fable for instanse.. brand new.. first 20 times it said could not read disc.. so i took back to store and got new one.. thought it was the game.. but same thing happend with it this time... but finally got it to work... exept every 20 to 30 min of gameplay game would freeze... and have to start over >:( and yes i have had all of the green screens... first time i saw the hard disk error i thought it was gonna blow up or something... im currently playin halo 2.. beat 1 on it.. and am having little prob with it now.. took it apart and tenkerd wit it...

I've never had any problems with my own xbox, other than a dirty disc error now and then, but that hasn't happened for a long time now. I did once take my copy of halo over to a friends house (with a crappy disc drive) and when I pulled it out, there was a pretty deep, perfectly circular scratch all across the readable side... From then on it either hasn't worked, or has worked but loaded really slowly.
