Do You Think A Game Like "Liesure Suit Larry" Is Overdoing The Mature Content A

Hi fellow nighthawks!

I understand that some video games such as "GTA","The Godfather II",etc are rated correctly.besides, there's always someone older to buy it for younger kids. It's a difficult law to enforce.
As far as "Liesure Suit Larry",though, the sexual content is a little extreme. It shouldn't be for sale.

Re: Do You Think A Game Like "Liesure Suit Larry" Is Overdoing The Mature Conten

Why shouldn't it? Why shouldn't adult gamers be able to enjoy adult games? If you think that shouldn't be for sale than do you also think they should not make R rated movies that contain sexual content? And I don't know about you, but I'd much rather my kid play a game that is a bit heavy on the sexual content over something like GTA:SA which features verbal filth far beyond what I'd consider acceptable.

Adults are free to make their own decisions. Those who buy adult content for non-adults are breaking the law.

Ratings are for information, so that those who make decisions can do so as an informed consumer.

What should give one person the authority to say what another adult, within the limits of the law, can or cannot buy?

Kaz, do not try to bypass the swear filter.

Forgive me Grindspine, but trying to dodge the the swear filter was not my intention.I thought the fashion of the letters and symbols I used was OK.Seriously.

Thank you.

Well, they could of just not added such language to begin with. I am all for swearing when it's needed to convey feeling or move the story along, but most of the language in SA was just completely unnecessary. Good game, but they could have done without 90% of the language.

Actually it was necessary to convey the time period and location they were in. Growing up in Los Angeles during late '80's, early '90's, that's how it was. It needs to be looked at in the correct context.

Oh I know, trust me. We talked like that around here, too, back in the day. The thing is, in SA they went so over the top it wasn't even realistic anymore and it was just outright foul. They could have easily got the same message across with far less language. At least, in my opinion.

But that's how it was back then. I've lived in Los Angeles all of my life and have had many encounters with gangs. That's actually how it is. No offense, but unless you've lived here during that time period, you can't really say that it isn't realistic.

You don't think we have gangs in Minnesota??? Trust me dude, I grew up all around them. GD's, Vice Lords, Latin Kings, Mexican Mafia, Native Mob, Bloods, and many less known gangs. Not only were the schools I went to full of them but I was actually quite close with a lot of them outside of school. I think we are just misunderstanding each other on this. I am not saying the dialogue during the story and missions was unrealistic, no, that was spot on, it's just the stuff outside of that I found excessive at times. It just got really annoying hearing 100 f and n bombs every single time I play the game. All I am saying is they could have toned it down considerably outside of the actual story and mission parts. That is just my opinion and I don't expect others to feel the same.

I was just talking about gangs in L.A. Even though some gangs do spread through states and countries, they all don't act completely the same. I can assure you gangs in Compton, California, will most likely differ somewhat from gangs in your area. I'm specifically talking about Southern California during that time period. Toning down the language would have actually made it more unrealistic.

Re: Do You Think A Game Like "Liesure Suit Larry" Is Overdoing The Mature Conten

Well I am agreeing with you. I'm just saying, they could have toned it down outside of the story and missions considering this is a video game and there is this little thing called repetition. I guess I shouldn't have said it's unrealistic, just excessive and annoying. I'm sorry but after 4-5 hours of it I seriously can't take it anymore. As I said before, they could have easily achieved the same level of immersion with less language. That's my story and I am sticking to it :D

Edit: I just saw your edit and while I do agree that Compton was literally like the gang capitol of the world in the 90's, I can assure you a Blood here is just as ruthless and violent as a Blood in Compton or Watts. We didn't get coined Murderapolis just to sound cool...

Murderapolis...nice, lol. But you're right, Bloods and Crips in general are ruthless regardless of where they're from.

Re: Do You Think A Game Like "Liesure Suit Larry" Is Overdoing The Mature Conten

Yea it's pretty bad down there unfortunately :-\ But yea man nothing can hold a candle to LA in the 90's. There was a lot of gangs here but not anywhere near the numbers of gangs in LA.

I'm a one man gang. :D

P.S. I think a game I own might just rival "SA".-"Saints Row II".

To sum up my feeling on the matter, if the content might offend you, don't buy the game. The ratings labels are there for a reason, not just to stop underage people from buying them but also to tell people who might be more sensitive what is in the game.

Anyone remember the adult video games on atari??? Pixelated boobies at their finest! I just can't believe they've not release more mature games by now. I mean, honestly, I saw the fmv portion in night trap that threw everyone in an uproar, that was unintentional AND clothed. Yet movies have had all sorts of sexual content as long as anyone on this board has been alive.

My point? I really don't even know. I just find it odd the lack of mature content in video games vs. movies and the fact that people get in an uproar over mature content on a video game when much worse is commonplace in movies. I guess our moral pervertedness draws the line when it comes to animation and a controller.

And before anyone gets upset at me, I'm not a gta fan, Resident evil was so so, and I've only ever seen a demo of leisure suit larry on the pc 10 -15 years ago, I'm very partial, I just find the back and forth amusing.

It actually all has to do with money. Places like Wal-Mart (who's pretty much the biggest video game retailer next to GameStop) won't carry AO games, which means very low sales. Publishers don't want to take the chance. Not to mention, Video Games are still considered as toys by a lot of people. In my opinion, as long as Nintendo is around, that mentality won't change anytime soon.

Respectfully Spartan,that's what everyone says.
Not buying the game due to the fact of the content and rating on the package is great if your a parent, but their children will find a way to get there hands on it one way or another. It's like hooch,if you're not old enough to buy it,there's always friends that will accommodate you.

We've established that ultimately,we can't stop kids from get their hands on these titles,so I'd rather catch my kid(if I had one)with a copy of "GTA:SA" with all of it's adult language, than the strong sexual content+swearing from a game like "LSL".Besides, kids these days, especially with the net, probably know more curse words than all of us.And no I don't think it's right.

What these kids, and because kids are curious, especially with subject matter their folks tell them not to watch, you parents know they're going to do it behind your back. There is far greater evil on the web, then there is in video games.Leave the games with the trivial cussing alone, there is much bigger fish to try. Also,I think we all know that the "Parental Lock",and other security is a joke in the greatest degree.

Thank you,
Kaz

Well, it's good that you're not in a position to control what people buy.

Ratings systems are great because they allow consumers the freedom to make informed decisions. By "consumers" I mean adults who purchase goods or services. It is the job of both the retailers to prevent underage people from buying certain content, and the job of the parents to prevent it as well.

However, as long as retailers are carding and parents are watching their kids, there is no problem.

I am glad that authoritarians who think that their opinions should be forced upon others are not in a position to censor everything in society. (That is, to some extent they aren't.)
