I'm not gonna lie FF7 was my first final fantasy experience sine FF1 on nes, and I was blown away just from the sheer story! The depth was great also I could sit there and grind away with ease trying to lvl up my materia and make the best group attacks i could...with some of those secret materias! I just recently played and beat ffX I really enjoyed it thought the battle system was a very unique and full experience! I thought maybe the story lagged a bit every once in a while, and got downright confusing but oh well! I picked ff7 because it was the game that really got me going with rpg's and it is still my favorite game to this date!

This isn't even a fair fight. FF7, although I STRONGLY disagree, is considered by many the end all be all of Final Fantasy games. So putting FFX in direct competition with FF7 is not very fair. As for me, I'm in the minority. I have both, I couldn't get into 7 but I almost finished 10. I got stuck and haven't gone back to finish, but I enjoyed 10 an awful lot. :)

UCK! FFVII hands down! I couldn't stand FFX for some reason and I have tried to play the game numerous times.

SEPHY-KUUUUUUUUUUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *glomps Sephy plushie*

Final Fantasy 7 is better than ten because the game infused so many characters that had alot more depth then any other game character at the time. The game is an inspiration for all RPG's since then. The spin-offs should be coming out because alot of people want to know the story of characters that you only see a little of there past.

Uh...what? Oh just another 7 fanboy and the character development was broke in 7, try 8 for heavy Character focus. Oh and the orginal Final Fantasy is an inspiration for all RPG's so I guess you could consider one of its sequels that.

The FF's that shaped are rpg's are:
FF1 = Breakthrough
FF2 = birth of the rpg stories
FF3 = Gameplay
FF4 = this is the true FF that shaped rpgs into what they are today
FF5 = furthered gameplay and story focuses in rpg's
FF6 = perfection with the technology available and this is what makes it surpass 7
FF7 = PRESENTATION!!! this is what makes 7 what it is...it presented itself unlike any rpg before but 7 lacks so much in what some others thrived in

not going to go further than 7 for now

Oh man. Indeed. VIII by far supercedes VII for character developmeny in any form or fashion. I don't think most people take this in to account, as in they do not notice or do not care, I'm not sure which.

I don't know if I'd agree with this, though. As far as originals and inspiration goes, I'd much rather credit Dragon Quest. They did it better and first. Unless you're speaking of later Final Fantasies, but regardless, Dragon Quest has more influence in Japan, and thusly more influence on RPGs made there, I think. But Final Fantasy heavily (in the later years) influenced western RPGs, or to speak more correctly, which western RPGs we got..

Dragon Quest better!? Final Fantasy I surpassed Dragon Quest and that's what made FFI a hit with 13 sequels so far and Square an authority on rpg's. But the Dragon Quest games did get better, but never better than the Final Fantasy series. Oh and Dragon Quest is much more popular in Japan than the US but this has nothing to with having more influence in Japan. Final Fantasy is the champ. Plus DQ is cheesey :D

Yeah, definitely was Dragon Quest better than Final Fantasy. Phantasy Star was a superior game too, in my opinion. As far as the original three go, I could never give credit to Final Fantasy. Maybe before I had experienced the others, but never afterward. The other titles offer a much more compelling an original experience, I feel. Again, this my personal opinion.

What isn't my opinion, though, are sales numbers. Final Fantasy has never reached Dragon Quest's popularity in Japan. Final Fantasy has better "world wide" "round" numbers, but Dragon Quest far supercedes Final Fantasy in Japan - there's no doubt about this. Dragon Quest has been for a long time and will always be -the- Japanese RPG. While you may think this has no influence on the Unites States, it's quite incorrect. Only recently have western developed games become more prominent in the playing field. Most titles I remember fondly when I was younger were most definitely Japanese developed games. Most games I heavily anticipate now are Japanese developed games. This is, of course, my personal preference. However, the Japanese market heavily shaped the early US market. While the intersests have always been different, there has always been a shadow connection between the two. Only recently has this become shaken in a more prominent way.

What I'm trying to say is that due to Dragon Quest's immense popularity, many RPGs attempt to emulate this style. Final Fantasy had no -real- major influence until after the advent of Final Fantasy VII, and this is still in America of which we speak. Americans cared not for Final Fantasy until they had happy CG cut scenes, which paved the path for the pre-modern RPG state (late 90s, early millennium). If you disagree and state that FF III was a popular game and changed things - it didn't. While I PERSONALLY do love VI, along with VII and VIII (VI, VII, and VIII are my personal favorites), sales numbers dictate the truth here.

Final Fantasy III sold an admirable, but not quite revolutionary 1.4 million units. FF VII, on the other hand, peaked 9 million. Clearly, the cultural phenomenon has begun at VII.

But I digress, because that last entire bit is just going on an assumption by my part.. :-)

Another thing to consider is that Dragon Quest was STILL, DESPITE lackluster popularity in the United States, outdoing Final Fantasy by a -long shot- in worldwide sales until VII. That's when things started to swing (due to lack of popularity and, indeed, lack of release of several titles in USA..).

Something else is that Dragon Quest is not the same style of game as Final Fantasy in the end result. Sure, intiially they are all just RPGs. Basic and beautiful. But as time has run on, Dragon Quest has stuck moreso with the gameplay and core concepts, improving upon those, not really caring if the PSX iteration runs on SNES style graphics are not (despite that, selling well over 4 million units making it the best selling PSX game in Japan - period), whereas Final Fantasy is a constant struggle for "neo" or "new". Something else to consider indeed.

Anyway, not really trying to argue, but I feel that the immense success in Japan -does- have an effect in the United States. Not so much anymore, no, but in the past? Certainly.

Didn't mean for any of this to sound aggressive if it did. :-)

Ok, How Final Finatasy owns Dragon Quest:

Dragon Quest is a one on one rpg...you can only find that today while soloing in a mmorpg, thus it sucks compared to having other characters and the strategy that comes along with it.

Also the first person view while fighting where you cant see your Character was surpassed by Final Fantasy with the side bad vs good view

Dragon Quest is out right boring even if you like rpgs...the evil Dragon stole the princess I am going to spend a WHOLE game getting her back....Final Fantasy even makes fun of this and takes a jab at DQ by making the intro of the game you saving the princess and gives you an a key item like what happens at the end of DQ where you save the princess and the ball of light or whatever and then after that FF takes you on a whole different ride

Also Final Fantasy introduced many new elements: Ships, Canoe, Airship, change of character job/class etc

There is much more I could go into about this but this a FFX vs. FFVII thread not a DQ vs FF thread :lol

And sales dont make a game better.... Also you have to look at the factor of the entire video game industry when you throw out your sales records... The playstation era is when videogames became big buisness oh and sales numbers never dictate truth, Alien vs Predator was number one in the box office when it was released but that still didn't make it a good movie...

I do not feel we are arguing, I think we are intellectually debating games in a friendly matter which is what these forums are for in the first place right? So I will always listen to your opinion, plus I hate people that agree with everything I say.

Oh and about the other FFs, I strongly disagree with you but I think we should make another topic if we continue that.

Okay, Dragon Quest isn't that great. I've played some of them, and didn't care for 'em that much. Also, sales mean something-and in America, Final Fantasy sells waaaaaaay more then Dragon Quest. And no, I'm no fanboy-I just really like FFVII......... :rockin

The Dragonquest games do tend to fall short in storyline, but they've got some of the best gameplay in an RPG. I'm a huge fan of DQVIII because it was like the good old days of RPGs had returned. Final Fantasy continues to go in the wrong direction, with its girly characters and real time combat.

Of the two I only played FFX. I liked the game but I didnt play that much of it. The cut scenes were amazing. I guess the thing I didnt like about the game was that it seemed to fixed. I think I like games more like Morrowind where you can do anything rather than FFX where it seems linear.

Heh. This is the kind of guy who's going to agree that Dragon Quest truly is a good game. All these comments about it being "cheesy" just blow my mind. Things have changed.

I was actually drinking last night and came up with an urge to play DQ. I fired up the old original and man.. that first castle music brings banck so many memories. I played for a while and then decided to lay down with the SP next to my ear playing that music until I fell asleep. Beautiful.

Sky, I'll get back to you on your post soon, I haven't yet had time to post a long one.

I deleted a bunch of stuff I had on here, sorry if it's against the rules. yeah Sephiroth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Many people here are the responsible sort. Being drunk at home > being out doing stupid things with your friends while drunk.

I would rather play video games then get my leg broken while acting like a donkey while drunk. Having a broken leg sucks, period. Firsthand experience here. If your leg is broken, you can't go outside, at least not like you could with a healthy leg.

Also, I have a job and spend plenty of time with my friends, and I would go so far to say that many other people here have jobs and friends too.

Look, here's my point. You are making baseless assumptions about people here. You are insulting them, not quite outright, but insulting them nontheless. If you don't wish to "waste your time" here, then don't. You can go have fun while being drunk instead. Hope the memories of the broken leg are nice.

Final Fantasy has gone in some wrong directions with the girlsy chraracters and all women in the game almost nude. Since when were videogames a form a pornography. But it's better then players who get drunk and can only think of playing their "beloved," childish games. When I get drunk, I have friends around and some girl under my arm......not a videogame controller. Sorry, this just made me think of how right now, we're wasting are time arguing about a few stupid games while we could be out with friends or getting a job. I would rather have memories of getting my leg broken doing something stupid with my friends then just sitting around playing games and arguing about them. THINK ABOUT IT!!

Wow. I love your blatant assumptions. How about asking a little further to find out more details? I'd love to give you an outline of my night, but I don't really feel as though I'm required to give anything to you in such regards.

I'd love to continue on about how my girlfriend sleeps at my side each night, but it's not worth the time it would require me to emit such speech in your direction.

Ok, I see I went too far with my last post here.....I did say stuff without knowing the total truth-that and I went waaaay off topic. Sorry about the bulls*** people. :-[ :-[ :-[

Oh it's okay man. :-)

I do agree with you sky, 6 was an amazing game that mastered almost everything about an RPG. The music was amazing! I just like ff7's story and charters. The music is also wonderful in ff7 too.

For me it would go FF7>FF6>FF3>ff10>ff1>ff9>ff10>ff5
