Mass Effect 2 Thread *Update: New DLC coming March 29th*

EA CEO John Riccitiello has revealed that Mass Effect 2 will appear on "multiple platforms" early next year.

"[In Q4] BioWare will release Mass Effect 2 on multiple platforms," he said during an EA earnings call, referring to the fourth quarter of the company's next fiscal year. In non-business speak, that means a January-March 2010 launch.

It's still not clear exactly which platforms the sci-fi sequel will appear on. 360 and PC releases are surely a given, but the big question on everyone's lips is whether it'll hit PS3 too.

In interviews with CVG, BioWare co-founders and co-CEOs Drs. Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk had both dodged the possibility of the series releasing on PS3.

But seeing as the franchise is no longer being published by Microsoft, and based on BioWare-parent EA's multiplatform strategy, we see no reason why the game wouldn't appear on Sony's console too.

Like the article says, 360 and PC versions are imminent. But I'm guessing a PS3 version is also coming. :)

Re: Confirmed: Mass Effect 2 goes multi-platform.

Multi-platform, for now at least, means PC and 360. Even if it does come to the PS3, it would probably come a few months after the 360 release, like they insist on doing for the PC version for reasons that are beyond me. >_>

Yep. But with EA behind it..we could very well see a simultaneous release.

BioWare has already confirmed that the PC version will be out several months after the 360 (not 100% on this, but I remember a mod on the official forums mentioning it). I would be unbelievably pissed at EA if they just left PC gamers hanging for 3-4 months, while the 360 and PS3 versions were ready on time.

Re: Confirmed: Mass Effect 2 goes multi-platform.

Yeah, do they view console owners as more important? I wonder how many copies of Mass Effect sold on the 360 as opposed to PC. I believe there's still alot of gamers on the PC. Enough, in fact to warrant a simultaneous release. You can't release it several months later...add one or two things...and think it's all A-ok. Because by then, it's an old game.

There is quite a market on the PC, especially for BioWare games. Their two best selling games are PC exclusives, and most of their core fanbase has a decent PC, yet this hasn't stopped them from releasing every game since Kotor several months later for the PC. It took Jade Empire two years to get to the PC (although that is understandable, considering its gameplay is better suited to a gamepad). They looked like they were ready to start paying attention to PC gamers again with Dragon Age, but now that EA's taken over, we'll probably become more of an afterthought.

Re: Confirmed: Mass Effect 2 goes multi-platform.

PC gaming is dead, didn't you all get the memo?

EA's just ahead of the curve. :lol

No, I think the general understanding is that console gamers are fickle, much more prone to hype, and also much more prone to the "buy it the day it comes out" mentality. Ensuring console gamers "get it first" is just a means of cashing in. If anything it shows respect to a more mature PC gaming audience, one that is willing to buy a good game in large quantities even after the hype machine has ceased its tirade.

Sure, maybe many will still buy it, but they won't be happy about having to wait for it. The fact that PC gamers are generally attentive enough to pay attention to a game even after the hype has passed doesn't mean they want to wait until the hype has passed. Unnecessary waiting is a bad thing no matter what platform you're on.

I agree. The ideal situation would be to have development cycles that worked towards a simultaneous multi-platform release, but if console versions are ready to be shipped and sold, holding them back to wait for the PC version could become problematic.

Console versions may also be slated for a specific release due to other reasons, such as competitor release dates, which in some respects the PC platform would be immune to.

Sweet!!!

But I was pondering... as I read through this thread...

that if they did "multi platform" and they're brining it out (supposedly) for PS3... I wonder if there's a later incentive for a Wii version, like Dead Space is popping out???
