Would you rather have KoToR 3 or an MMO?

I would rather 3. But, take a key point that KoToR MMO hasn't been officially been announced just confirmed. There was another article either on slashdot.org or edge-online.com that reported this a week ago.

I am merely defending my post.  If it isn't attacked, the argument will end.

That is probably it, but honestly, if I didn't know that Kotor 3 wasn't going to happen, my vote would go to Kotor 3.  I mean, look at the message that went along with the announcement.  "LucasArts and BioWare invite you to attend the official unveiling of the game that's been rumored about for years."  Kotor 3 rumors have been around for the past four years, while the Bioware Austin studio that is developing the MMO opened only a little over two years ago.  Rumors of the Kotor MMO aren't much more than a year old.  There is also the fact that about a year ago, BioWare announced that it was working on a project with Lucasarts, one independent from the MMO.  The hooded figure in the background of the figure also bares a striking resemblance to Kreia, from the second game.  The fact that it is a statute makes it seem likely to me that the picture is one of the temple on Malachor V (I won't go into details there to avoid spoilers).  Honestly, I'm beginning to think there is a glimmer of hope that this is Kotor 3.

Hmm, probably gonna be exclusive to 360 either way though?

I wasn't attacking it though..it's all good though. But if you feel like I was, then I apologize. I meant no ill-will.

I am sure it will at least be on PC, as well. At least I hope so, being as that would rule for me :D

It will probably be on the PC too. Now that EA is at the helm, we could see both a 360 version and a PC version being released at the same time, rather than the game being ported to the PC a few months later like BioWare has done lately.

Yet again I just have to ask why? If you are a fan of video games I simply do not see how you could not like KOTOR as it basically exemplifies everything a good game should be. Again, the character development is as deep as it gets, the landscapes are varied and interesting, the main story and character sub-stories are as well written as any great movie, the mini games are fun, the voice acting is perfect, the replay value is excellent, and most of all the gameplay is phenomenal due to the high amounts of character customization. I am not saying you aren't entitled to an opinion, nor am I looking for an argument, I am just literally asking what about the game you didn't like?

I actually found KOTOR to be the exact opposite of what a game should be. :lol

As I have discussed with many other people in RL, KOTOR basically takes an action game and combines it with an RPG. The problem is that, as a fan of action games, everything that makes an action game fun was stripped out. As my roommate concurred, as a fan of RPG's, that the RPG elements of KOTOR weren't the ones that should have been added, or simply didn't mesh well with the other elements of the game. In a sense, KOTOR to me is an example of a game that takes the worst parts of action games and RPG games, and brings them together.

As well, I've never been a fan of giving my character orders and then watching him/her carry them out. Watching my character fight other characters in the game was infuriating, because not only did it make me feel completely removed from the entire experience, but it also looked like it would have been fun to actually participate in. Instead of making any attempt to engage the player in combat gameplay, KOTOR basically has you filling out Excel spreadsheets, looking at experience meters and tech trees, and then passively sit back and watch the AI reap the rewards.

But even aside from the lack of involvement with combat, the entire game suffers from other faults. The environment is completely unresponsive or interactive, save the times you are supposed to engage the environment to solve a puzzle/open a door. Whether or not it was actually the case I felt completely restricted to the linear path I was supposed to follow. Any chance I had to veer away from it (the sidequests and so forth) just felt like a waste of time, because I wasn't interested in seeing my character fill in one more point on his experience bar. And at the end of the day, I'm not sold on the dialogue tree system Bioware uses in most of their games. Something about it still feels utterly wrong, and I would much rather have a cutscene theatrically or dramatically get its point across, than having me select every option I can individually and make the dialogue stunted and broken.

I should let it be known that I'm not a fan of RPG's in general, though I do enjoy levelling up my character and gaining new abilities and whatnot. Mass Effect was tolerable. Too Human was entertaining. Final Fantasy XII got the job done. But KOTOR just didn't offer me any sort of reward or enjoyment from playing the game. The gameplay was tedious, and what may have been an interesting story was hampered by the way in which it was presented, sometimes being lost in the sidequests, other times failing to add any sort of impact or emotion to the lines delivered and plot's twists/progression. Over ambitious perhaps, but a lackluster game was the result.

I can see your points about the combat. I am a fan of turn based RPG's so for me that was not an issue. I don't know. From the start of the game until the credits rolled I was immersed in the story and all the sub stories. I truly did enjoy the environments and meeting all the new NPC's on them. I loved doing some of the tactical stuff in this game such as planting a bunch of mines then leading enemies over them. That was a lot of fun. I shouldn't say it is a perfect game because it did have faults. But the majority of reviews give this game around a 8-9 which I is what I would give it. Not a perfect 10, but a dang good game. And while your opinion on the game is in the deep minority, I still respect the fact that you actually explained why in detail :)

I would have posted up why beforehand if I knew someone would listen. :lol

I do understand that critically and financially this game is a success, and I try my best not to reprimand those who do like it. I fully accept being in the minority on this, because for some reason, this game just doesn't click with me. There's nothing technically wrong with it, its just not my style of game.

Yea, that makes total sense to me. I am glad you acknowledge that the game was a success, even if you did not personally like it. And to be honest, I actually love hearing criticism about games I rate highly. When I go to gamefaqs and read older reviews I always read the lower scores simply to give another perspective on the game. Sometimes a personal bias can mask issues with the game that those negative reviews will reveal. I'm not saying after reading your criticism I would change my rating of the game, but it did make me think back and question if I liked the battle system as much as I remember or not ;)

The first one was playable, the second one was boring, neither were all that great. Play Jade Empire and you'll see what I mean...same damn game hosed down in kung-fu juice.

Ladies and gentlemen, we proudly present:

Star Wars: The Old Republic for PC

Ugh, I'm not surprised, but no Kotor 3....EVER! >_________________________________________________________>

For Christ's sake the second game was tailor-made for a sequel. The ending was a damned cliffhanger. >_>

Oh well, this looks somewhat promising at least. -___-

You would think EA would do a sequel... since it's, well you know, EA.

Nah, MMO's make a lot more money. >_>

Honestly though, I read an article on the MMO and it sounds really cool. It's too bad that any excitement I could have over the game is completely destroyed by the fact that I have confirmation that Kotor 3 won't be coming.

*points at countless of sports games* i think if they discovered how much they could juice out of the KOTOR series they would treat them like sports games

Their kinda already doing that with Mirror's Edge but, at least some of the promises sound fantastic.
