PS2 Officially drops to $129.99

True, I wouldn't be surprised to see another drop when the PS3 actually does come out.

I'd say a screamin' deal would be $100. It kinda reminds me when I bought my first Sega Master System right when the Genesis came out. The console was $20 brand new and games were $5 a piece. My brother and I each had $50, so we pooled our money together and bought a copy of just about all the titles that were left.

I'm willin' to bet that's when it goes to $99.99. :D

I don't much buy your "shipped" etc etc argument. It's one that dances around the prospect of Sony having faulty hardware when the company has earned a reputation for it. The mere fact that you deny the reality that Sony's brand name has become synonymous with "disc read error" displays the fantastical reality in which you reside.

Sartori, I do not live in a "fantastical reality."

Numbers of total problematic systems mean nothing if they are not put into context via ratios: that is to say total systems suffering flaws over total systems shipped.

As I said before, an ANOVA comparison would be the only way to accurately compare the system failure rates. More simply, that is a test of statistical variance. "Analysis of variance" between and within groups is what is important here. Unless you've taken some statistic classes, rendering those numbers is statistically unlikely.
which is what I am attempting to do.. except that is near impossible to poll... unfortunately

It's not hard to find out how many total Ps2 systems are sold.

BUT it is impossible to find out which NEW Ps2 was sold and then was returned. That would require tracking of each individual S/N.... and that's unfortunately... impossible.
Even samples from all three systems would suffice for an ANOVA test.
I concur that he is a bit of a fruitbasket, but I agree with him completely.
:\ You're agreeing with someone that you just admitted was a "fruitbasket"?

Sartori, since (as you've already said) this debate seems fruitless, how about we just end it and let the Sony fans celebrate that the system is dropping in price. At least for you, that means that hopefully you'll see fewer Sony systems and games on the shelf.

I agree with Grindspine that the number of faulty consoles should be compared to the ones that are still running years after their manufacture date. However I also agree that Sony does have a reputation of having faulty hardware. And it could be that it's baseless, but the reputation is still there.

Personally, my PS2 is still running like a champ after two years (Has it been that long??) and I have yet to get a disk read error. But I do realize that one day I will see one. But hopefully it will be when the PS3 is being sold at reasonable prices. Or around tax season. :D

I have two PS2s. The fat one I bought in 2002 and it still works fine. The slim one was a Christmas present in 2004 and it works fine. Actually, I've played it for 7+ hour stretches and not had it overheat, even though most people say you shouldn't play the slim PS2 for more than 4 hours at a time. It's all about ventilation, people! :lol Plus, I have a suspicion that most people are stupid enough to have the PS2s standing vertically, when they last longer if you have them horizontal.

Honestly, the only Sony system I've had a problem with was the PSP.

Hm. I guess I am the stupid one then. Because I have mine soldiered up and have zero problems.

Is there any evidence that suggests that having them vertical will shorten the life span??

There's something about the way gravity pulls the discs when it's standing that way.

But perhaps I put it too offensively. I apologize.

It is true though that most PS2s that come back defective are either because they used them to play DVDs a lot (that wears out the lens faster) or because they had the system set up vertically.

I remember hearing the vertical stuff. One of the reasons I always kept mine horizontal. :D

I always tell my brother it's better to have them horizontally, and I knew I was right about it. After all, you can tell he doesn't know much about games...he bought Max Payne :o
