Resident Evil 5 Demo impressions

I know, it's late, I'm an insomniac, but I had to play this demo. I made a Japanese account on my 360 so I could get it, and here's what I think of the game.

First off, I was wowed by the graphics. RE5 is a BEAUTIFUL looking game. Probably the thing I appreciated the most was that even in dark rooms indoors, they made the differences in colors, and lighting vibrant enough were you wouldn't be walking into a pitch black room of seemingly nothing. The animations are very much like that of Resident Evil 4. The controls felt a bit awkward on the 360 controller. I found myself trying to play it like RE4 on the Gamecube countless times during the demo. The aiming functions just like Resident Evil 4 as well, definitely not a bad thing. I have not tried the co-op out yet, so I won't be talking about that here.

Speaking of the co-op, that happens to be the thing I have a beef with. Yes, I know I just said I haven't played the co-op, but it even having the AI play as Sheva, I ran into these problems. First of all, I think having the item screen be something that pops up while gameplay is still going on is a bad design choice, especially for this game. You switch weapons, use items, etc. by hitting the y button, then a 9-square menu pops up over your character, where you must then use the left stick (which controls your character's movement when not in the menu) to move the cursor and select an item. This could sound good on paper, but it really doesn't work in this game. I think either a quicker way of switching weapons needs to be worked out, or they should bring back the menu that actually froze the gameplay. When I first saw this menu (before I ran into enemies), my first thought was "What if I get in one of those situations were there are 5 people surrounding me, and I run out of ammo on my shotgun, all I have ammo left on is some gun I don't use very much, so I don't remember where it is on this menu?" Now, the situation I just described didn't EXACTLY happen to me. There weren't very many guns in the demo, which is understandable, so there really was no gun that I didn't use often. Since I was new to the game though, it was just as difficult to switch weapons, or use a green herb. I actually died because of this.

Overall, the demo was pretty good, but that issue with the co-op really needs work. Capcom, I would not hold the least bit of a grudge against you if you just dropped the co-op even. I do still need to play with another human player, but these menu issues really need to be worked out.

That was very intense. I just played it and I do agree that menu thing is very similar to Dead Space. Yet not fun when you're in a hurry.

Biggest beef, is I hate hate the controls now, they are too much like Gears of War when turning and moving around. I want the original RE4 camera movements :(

It's the same controls from RE4 of course, but the 360 pad feels so weird when I'm trying to use the knife. This game will feel more comfortable on a PS3 pad for sure however!

Regardless of this, this game is gonna rock the house...<3 :D

UPDATE:

The game does allow you to change the control setup to match Resident Evil 4 PERFECTLY. No more Gears of War movement especially!

Now I can enjoy this game :D!!

Thank GOD.

It was alright... I give it a 7/10

I was bored half the time. There's too much downtime between the mobs of zombies, or maybe we were just moving from area to area too slow. I also the right stick rotated your body instead of tilting the camera, that really threw me off. :-\

Coming from someone who's never played a RE game ever

Here is the instructions to create a Japanese Xbox live account. It's very easy. The demo is in Englidh dialogue!
@Fishballs
It is FREE for all Silver accounts-no need for a Gold acct.

The demo is brief but I liked what I saw. Beautiful cel shaded graphics and decent JRPG action. Definitely worth a download.

1) Head on over to Microsoft's passport Web site (if you're logged in to a current account, make sure to sign out). Sign up for a new, free Hotmail account.
2) When asked, remember to answer that you're from Japan -- don't worry, you dirty liar, we won't judge you.
3) The next part, which would be the "trickiest," is entering some additional information about where you are from. You'll have to enter bogus information. The following should work fine (the phone number is for a Domino's Pizza near Akebonobashi Station in Tokyo):

Postal code: 150-2345
Province: Tokyo-to
Phone Number: 098-974-0604

4) Once you've activated your new Hotmail account, it's time to head on over to your Xbox 360. Switch profiles if necessary (the X button) and create a new profile, and a new Xbox Live account.
5) You'll next have to sign in with your new Japanese passport. Keep the number for Domino's Pizza Akebonobashi handy, because you're going to need to enter it again. Also, you might get hungry.
6) Create a gamertag and ... that's it!
Anything downloaded off of the Japanese marketplace can be played using accounts from other regions. Enjoy yourself, and save me a slice of pizza if you decide to order any.

In my opinion, that's sort of the problem.

After playing games like Gears of War 2, or even Left 4 Dead, RE5 certainly feels (as aleeock mentioned) a little slow, and quite cumbersome. The gameplay of RE4, while brilliant at the time, is definitely showing its age in RE5. Not being able to aim and walk at the same time is a huge oversight, and the quick time button presses to jump, interact with objects, and melee enemies, again just feels slow and pedantic. This gameplay worked 4 years ago, but now feels as though it is in desperate need of an update.

Even so, the game is fun. As mentioned, its RE4 plus co-op, so its hard to be overly critical of it.

Even Aleeock told me, that it was boring, when you have to stand still in order to take aim and fire. Honestly, I never realized this sort of problem until she pointed it out to me.

Hey is there finally a quick weapon change button {as opposed to having to enter the menu everytime}??? That is one thing I always felt was missing in RE4.
