Misconceptions about the swine flu

it seems people dont know whats going down about this

The Bay of Swines love Video games!

It's gotten so bad, that now people are buying like crazy, not just in the USA, but Mexico as well!. Example at my store, I saw a man with a medicial mask come in and buy 25 large bottles of hand sanitizer. We've been sold out of the stuff for an entire week and people are still demanding it!

lol, They're seriously thinking of closing schools across my entire state. This is just plain stupid. We've only had like 10 cases.

same here....

people our defense systems need this kind of disease and germs so that it can learn how to defend itself from the virus....

We see a new strain of the flu every year. This one just happens to be more deadly (the death rate is still under 10% though). I doubt we'll be seeing a pandemic or anything though. The media does this every year or two. A disease pops up that has the potential to kill large numbers if it spreads on a very large scale, and they blow it out of proportion. Last time, it was avian flu. Before that, it was SARS. Both killed a few hundred in east asia, but neither caused a global pandemic.

ya, i doubt this think will turn into the bubonic plague er anything. Seems like the bird flu thing to me. I don't feel like getting all worked up over it. I figure if I don't lick things in hospitals er stuff, I will prolly be all good. :D

Yea. Don't go licking things in hospitals ya dork :lol

They've shut down several schools in the area near me for a couple weeks because of it. I wish I was in school when this was going on so I could take a couple extra weeks for Spring break. :D

I hope that my school doesn't shut down. It's a month from graduation. I don't want that delayed.

Ah, yeah that would suck. Here, you're allowed like 15 days off of school per year, so if it's shut down for a couple weeks, the students here would still graduate on time.

It looks like the Swine Flu is starting to blow over, as there was only 1 casualty in the U.S.? However, props to the media for scaring everyone half to death.

it hasnt blown over yet

racism by the chinese over the swine flu

Man imagine that you have pandemic going on in your country and foreign countries want quartine your citzens when they try enter there country.I mean how dare China show some common sense. :D

Common sense?! That's not right! Not all people in Mexico have the swine flu. China went a little too far on this, especially randomly sending them to the hospital.

Consider their population density, and they're availability to emergency services compare to ours, and their health care...

It might actually save a lot of money, worry, and lives to take some stern precautions in China.

The Swine (H1N1... meaning an orthomyxovirus with hemgglutinin and neuraminidase type 1) flu is also known as the agent causing the Spanish influenza epidemic of 1918 and 1919.

It has been around for a long time and has brought about it's ugly head frequently in human history.

The reason it is so big in the news right now is that A) the World Health Organization and CDC look generally to the flu strains in Asia to prepare vaccinations for the following year. The fact that this epidemic started in Mexico was unexpected.

B) The death rate in Mexico was fairly high, even for healthy adults. However, I would bet (as someone with experience working in the hospital environment) that the mortality was caused by secondary respiratory infections after the initial flu infection.

As far as pandemics go, in the U.S., this is more of a headache and a media frenzy than a threat to society as a whole. If, however, it is not controlled, it could cause massive morbidity and mortality in countries where sanitation and health care are not to the standards of industrialized countries.

Here's a helpful link that I found describing influenza infection in general:
