I used to care for the Major till I found out she was a lesbian.

Does she actually get a girlfriend or do they just hint that she is? Too many shows hint at it through subtext but they never actually show real relationships. There needs to be more out lesbians in anime, if you ask me. It's a shame that anime makers have to tiptoe around the subject because they are afraid of bigotry.

Yep, unfortunately, people like Mavericker will automatically hate, and boycott anything with the word "lesbian" anywhere near it.

It isn't limited to anime either. Similar situations exist in many mediums.

Like reality. And 'anything where people are remotely around/hear of it'.

Or anything gay, or anything with witchcraft, devilry, or anything that glorifies sex.

Put in layman's terms: anything different, anything fake, and anything normal.

It might not be for fear of bigotry. It may indeed be for fear of losing a portion of the audience. Alternately, perhaps that is the sort of thing that is hinted at in order to increase the size of the audience. Of course, it may also simply be that there is no need to go into any more depth with that sort of storyline, because it is more or less irrelevant to the main narrative. To speculate about the motives behind the decision to go halfway in that direction is a fairly fruitless endeavor, because the reasons for doing so are relatively unclear.

Mavericker, I'm not trying to pick on you or antagonise you when I say this, but why would you boycott anything gay, or anything that glorifies sex? Even if you don't personally abide by that value system why do you want to restrict everyone's system of values to your own? Don't people have the right see sex as something beautiful and enjoyable? Don't two consenting adults who wish to express their feelings for one another physically, be they of the same gender or not, have the right to do so? And does not art (even a cartoon sitcom) have the ability to reflect real life in it's content?

That's true.

I'm sure there's a lot of anime that puts in subtext on purpose to increase the size of the audience. I know that I personally enjoy it myself. :lol But sometimes it would be nice if it were more than subtext. There's only one or two shows off the top of my head where a main character being a lesbian is actually canon.

I think as time goes on you'll start to see it more. I don't watch too much anime, actually I don't really watch any, but through friends and whatnot I've watched the occasional movie or show, but from what I've seen the storylines don't revolve much around relationships to begin with. The ones that are more relationship centered are often really, for lack of a better word, weird. For example, I heard of one anime where there is an alien who pretends to be 15 years old and has a crush on his teacher. I think the reason some anime shows might not involve gay or lesbian relationships is because that would be relatively tame and simple compared to some of the interminglings that occur on other shows. As well, I'm not entirely sure the Japanese really have a "stance" on gay marriage, at the very least I certainly don't think it's as much of a hot topic issue as it is in the western world. It may simply be that animes don't go out of their way to establish a character as heterosexual, and so similarly they don't go out of their way to establish a character as homosexual. The only time a character's sexuality becomes noteworthy is when they're from another planet. :lol

But you would know better than me Mai. Out of curiosity, in the animes you've seen are heterosexual relationships left a lot less in the subtext and brought out to the forefront, more so than homosexual ones?

Yeah. Please Teacher, for example, is all about their relationship. But it's kind of a weird one like you said in the rest of your post. The guy in the relationship is a this guy who looks young but he's actually 18, but he's still in school because he was in a coma for a few years. His teacher is a half-human half-alien (that looks totally human) and they end up getting married.

There's another one called Scrapped Princess, where this guy named Leo was in love with the main character, Pacifica, and was very open about it. She didn't reciprocate, but it was there in the open. And actually she ended up falling in love with this other guy (while she had amnesia) and he died and she didn't remember him when she got her memory back (very tragic).

But it's also true that there's some animes that don't focus on the relationship. In Witch Hunter Robin, it's heavily hinted that the main female character (Robin) ends up with the main male character (Amon) but you never actually see anything. And in Fullmetal Alchemist it seems pretty obvious that Winry loves Edward, and that Hawkeye is in love with Mustang, but for whatever reason they didn't pursue that facet of the story.

And honestly, I do actually enjoy hetero pairings if they are written well. Well actually that's true of homosexual pairings too. It's no good if two girls are thrown together without any rhyme or reason. A pairing of any sort should have a good story behind it.

I think in FMA though, the focus was instead on brotherly love, the relationship between Ed and Al. You cried and you know it. :D It was also about the mistakes they made, and trying to atone for what had been done and make it right.

Yeah, I know. FMA is one of the best animes I've ever seen, personally. But I'm still irritated that Winry ended up in a different world than Ed and Al, thus negating any chance of a Winry/Ed relationship actually happening.
