When was the last traditional Resident Evil game?

Segatron Genesis... call me the wizard.
What's the one thing missing in Resident Evil games in the past? FEAR! Nothing to freak you out or cause suspense. RE4 and RE5 started to sway away from what caused us to not sleep in our beds at night.

Resident Evil 1 spooked us to death with being ALONE in a giant Mansion...Dogs scratching to get into the window...and Zombies slowly lurking.

Resident Evil 2 filled our eyes with fear with showing more than 10 Zombies on one screen at the same time, giant gators, and hideous mutant freaks.

Resident Evil 3 gave us paranoia with the lurking of the NEMESIS behind every corner.

Resident Evil Code Veronica, brought back the feel of RE1 of being on a special isolated fort that was on an Island. Yet had the dark eerie essence, when our controller started to vibrate whenever we tried to open a door.

So what do I think was the last good RE game? Code Veronica no doubt! It was the last of it's kind, it had REAL survival horror elements by limited ammo and health. Let's face it, the cross bow was a god awful weapon until you found the special "explosive arrow" kits. Which were very far in between. We reached a high point in the series, to see Wesker back from the dead again. The zombies were still slow as mud and eerie, since the camera angle wasn't perfect still, but it was a good sense of fear! The mutations were back and freaky as ever, the puzzles were challenging and sometimes would cause instant DEATH like in the torture chamber later in the game! Let's not forget, the spooky soundtrack, RE4 and 5 you rarely hear music unless it's during a cut scene or enemies attacking.

Why, oh why did Capcom steer away from that and focus on nothing but mutations?? Not saying RE4 and 5 stink, they are adored by far. Yet the old school elements of what made us scared to play the game, is long dead...

Maybe, RE6 will slove this?

Re: The last good Resident Evil game.

Mega I'm going to have to disagree with you partialy man RE: Code Veronica wasn't the last good one RE:0 was good and RE:Outbreak File 1&2 were alright. Now as far as RE:4 goes that was probably the least scary/suspense filled game I have seen of a supposed survial horror game also they should have kept the zombies. You know zombies scary villagers with a super tapeworm not really.

Re: The last good Resident Evil game.

To me, the last good, and if not the best, RE game was the RE:Remake for Cube. Graphics don't usually make a game, but this is one instance where they truly are the high point of the game. So not only does it have the creepiest atmosphere ever, they included what I call "super zombies" which were absolutely terrifying. That is the only RE game where there was honestly a few times I didn't want to keep playing it alone! I really like CV, too, just love REmake more :D Good write up, though, Mega.

Well which one do you think was the last good RE?

Now, when I say RE1, that includes the remake. Zero I didn't really include in this write up, it's just I'm still having many issues with it. I agree it's awesome graphically, but the game play was so out of place.

Re: The last good Resident Evil game.

I think they all have fear in a different way. They all represent a different fear in each one. Whether it be someone chasing you with a chain-saw or your partner being mauled and you can't help, it both gives off an intense atomsphere. RE4 and RE5 were both fearful in their own right, but in different ways.

Re: The last good Resident Evil game.

But doesn't RE4/5 give more action, than fear GM?

I didn't have much fear in RE4. Except for enemies getting too close or overwhelmed

Well Outbreak File# 1 was the last good one I played the thing about Outbreak File#2 is it felt more like an expansion pack than really it's own game in my opinion. RE:4 was a joke when it came to fear I wished Capcom would have kept RE out of it rather than gutting the game of all my favorite oppents. As far as RE: 5 I don't own Xbox 360 or PS3 so I can't say anything for certain how I haven't seen anything in the trailers to send a chill up my spine.

Re: The last good Resident Evil game.

RE Outbreak File 1 and 2 were amazing, but I wish the online play had a better communication barrier. I do admit, it was really good.

Re: The last good Resident Evil game.

Last good RE? I know you're not saying the rest suck, but I think you need to rethink your title a little if you actually like all the other RE's.

Anyways, I understand what you're trying to get at and I would say the last "good" RE would be 4. As much as I like CV, there was something about it that didn't feel like the original RE either. The last great traditional RE would go to 2 in my opinion. You also hit it right on the head about the music. The first 3 RE soundtracks were piano heavy which added a lot to the atmosphere.

Why did Capcom have to stray from zombies? Because the story was getting much bigger. The first RE's were contained in a city which was a better setting for zombies. But now Bioterrorism has gone global and since zombies aren't perfect, there were many people in the black market who tried to modify them to suit their needs. Hence mutations.

In the end, I prefer Capcom to go in this direction because by Code Veronica, you could already tell the formula was getting stale. Who knows, maybe in 6 they combine both game types? Regardless, I still love RE and Capcom hasn't disappointed me yet. Not once have I gone and ask why things are different.

Re: The last good Resident Evil game.

Creepin, I think, got the point down for the formula thing. But I think it should be called the 'When was the last traditional RE'? Or something like that......

Well, since most points have been put forth already, and I haven;t played a full RE to myself since my dad had RE:3.

I might throw in that the essence of "fear" is likely lost with those gamers who have played throughout the series. We've been there since the first RE, and now, we've seen it and know what's to expect. When a bunch of Zombies stutter into a room, whether they're the traditional Zombie or mutant worm head flinging' freak or something else, it doesn't matter. It'll get you to jump, your heart will go faster, and you might just die because that momentary fear has made you lose your judgement on who to attack first, or even if you should bother to hold your ground and run.

We know what to expect. I reckon if I put in a new game of the horror genre, nothing that came up on me would have that affect to the extent it would have hit me before. Haven't played an RE full, like I said, but I know Dead Space which I played recently for 16 hours straight didn't faze me as I poured through level after level, hammering my foes.

But, in the end, your imagination is what will set those experiences gamers aside from those who will be freaked out and find their dreams hallowed by the image of monsters, and those who will heave a sigh of relief when they find they've still got more than enough ammo left to tackle another wave, and a good nights sleep ahead.

I wouldn't know about that the first time I had dsl connection in my house was last Sept. so I never did online play. I do love the Outbreak File games although I wish in #2 they had let you fight those zombies you saw in that cut scene for zoo the ones who had been feeding on zoo animals and started to gain physcial characteristics silimar to the animals.

Everyone here is aware they are rebooting the series for RE6?

http://kotaku.com/5159088/resident-evil-gets-a-complete-reboot-with-re6

A good horror game would be nice, but lets be honest... the gameplay that made the old games scary is horribly ancient. If Capcom takes a step back instead of a step forward, it could spell disaster for the franchise.

Dead Space for me, captures the game play formula perfect and offers a genuinely creepy and at some points even offers a great scare factor, IMO. RE4 and 5 felt like action games with no scare-factor at all, whatsoever.

Great there going to do reboot they have already muliated the series in 4 and 5 horrorificly by the time the reboot is done the only thing the RE 6 going to have in common with the traditional part of the series which liked is the words Resident and Evil in the title.

in my opinion resident evil is a great franchise as it is... it might be different from its original roots but i still like the series as it is..... for me resident evil was mostly about tension, not scare factor and that is something even 4 and 5 still have. Plus nowadays very very few things scare me in movies, games and books (they just gross me out which is not = scary) so i seriously laugh at things that try to be scary and fail and prefer tension and/or suspense.
